Tim Cain's Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins -- They're the shadow king's favorite!
- 1 and 2/3 cup flour
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp cloves
- 1/4 tsp baking powder
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup chocolate chips
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 cup pumpkin (half of a 16 oz can)
- 1/2 cup (one stick) butter, melted
preheat oven to 350. grease muffin tins (one dozen regular size) or use baking cups. mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Break eggs into another bowl. add pumpkin and butter and whisk until blended. stir in chocolate chips. pour over dry ingredients and stir until just blended. do NOT overstir! scoop batter into tins and bake 20-25 minutes. after cooling, keep muffins wrapped in plastic to avoid drying.

disabled people want to hang out with our friends. "we don't want you to come if you're sick" is usually reasonable, but when you're ALWAYS sick? it just becomes "we don't want you to come."
asking if you can do anything for them signals that you do want to see your friend, and that you're willing to accommodate their disability, while still giving them the option to tap out if they really need to. it also opens the door for them to ask for support they might have felt too guilty to request.

Just watched a video that made me realize this year is an anniversary, and I'm coming with a plea.
This is the 25th anniversary of 9/11.
For people around the world, life as we knew it ended that day. For Muslims and Sikhs across America, a wave of violence and hate was about to begin. For an entire generation, life became marked with horror and terror.
I know for the "death to amerikkka" and lolironyposting groups of folks, that day is going to be meme central.
Please don't.
Just because other people suffered horribly doesn't mean we didn't suffer too. Trying to punish the people who saw and remember does not change what came after, and it doesn't help the cause of beating back the jingoism and propaganda. It just makes you look like an asshole.
By all means, push back on whatever bullshit Trump and Co. decide to whip out. (You know they will.) But let ordinary people grieve. Yes, other terrible things happened elsewhere, and yes, some of them were the fault of the US government. I was three when the Cold War ended. I don't know what you think I had to do with US anticommunist policy. So many of us are in that boat.
And if you need to rage about something, make it this:
No 9/11 probably would have meant a Kerry presidency in 2004 and McCain in 2008 (Kerry wasn't a bad guy but he wasn't, you know, brilliant). McCain 2008 would have meant a Democratic president in 2016, and McCain was what we call an "old guard" Republican--means he was wrong about a hell of a lot of stuff, but not insane and certainly not a corrupt pompous reality-TV conman. We would not have a fascist GOP today because McCain 2008 would have meant no Tea Party 2010.
The whole country took a hard swing right on 11 September 2001. It is why we are where we are today. If you want to rage, rage about that. Don't make fun of the people scarred by that day.

the situation with harry potter is kind of unprecedented in some ways imo because it is maybe the largest media franchise in history to be created & owned by a single person who still has direct creative control over it. who is also a billionaire with significant cultural/political influence. like the usual "no ethical consumption under capitalism" type excuses shatter on impact when the bigoted author in question is logging onto twitter every day saying explicitly that when you buy the tim hortons ravenclaw donut she is using your donut money to fund the genocide of trans people. like with big franchises usually there's at least a little more diffusion of responsibility than this
For the people wondering. The difference is not the degree of severity in harm she is causing. The difference is how easy it is to avoid the product, and how effectively that would solve the problem.
With mega corporations, you sometimes don't have the option to avoid a product. You can boycott one company, but if all the competitors are actually different shell companies under the same mega umbrella, your hard work leads to the same result. And with a board of directors, there is peer pressure to stay silent and let the dangerous practices continue. If someone grows a conscience, they can be voted out and replaced easily. They also control large portions of the job market, so even if their profits DO dip, they can hold those jobs hostage until the government subsidizes their lost profits. That makes it difficult to pressure these companies into positive change.
JK Rowling is one person, selling a product that nobody actually needs and that is easy to find alternatives to. If her sales drop significantly, she is the only person she has to answer to. She can choose to change her practices without worrying about being replaced. People who work producing Harry Potter stuff are just working for another company that bought a license to use Harry Potter. If Harry Potter stopped existing, these people would still have jobs. She has no leverage to force people to accept the way she uses her profits. We can stop her way more easily than we can stop Nestle or Sunoco.
