Birthdays

So Friday was my mommy's birthday, so I went home for it. Not a big deal unless you count the fact that she didn't know I was coming in. I just walked into the restaurant and tapped her on the shoulder. She looked back at me and then looked away. Then she bolted out of her seat and I gave her a hug and said "Did you really think I'd miss this?" And everyone cried.

I love my mommy.

Do It

DON'T SHUT ME OUT
words & music by Kristeva Grey, copyrighted 2003

We both know that I talk too much. I'd say that's my biggest flaw.
If you ask me how I'm feelin', you get whole stories unrehearsed and raw.
They're unrefined, unfiltered, and unfortunately succeptable
To stupid comments that could hurt you. Now, that's just unacceptable.

It only took a second, and a second isn't very long
To shatter all your trust and happiness. How could I have said something so wrong?
You don't say much, and that's the worst of all. I backpeddle & tell you to relax,
But you called me on my shit, and you stopped me in my tracks. Just...

CHORUS:
Don't shut me out! Don't turn your back! Don't look away!
Say what you mean! Go ahead and scream! Just please stay!
Yeah, yell in my face! But don't just pretend everything's okay!
And please believe I care. You can open up, I swear.

(bridge)
And it hurt so bad, 'cause the truth is such a bitter pill.
I stare blankly at tea candles, still flickering dimly on my windowsill.
One by one, I put them out, and my fingers barely feel the burn.
Then collapse back into bed. When will I learn?

(CHORUS)

(brief musical interlude)

I still can smell you on my sheets. Your perfume lingers in the air.
Upon my pillowcase, I find a strand of your highlighted hair.
I need to hear your voice, hoping one of these times you'll pick up the phone.
But you've turned off your cell, and I'm alone.
