Ibook number 6 is dead. Same fault as all the previous ones... (Graphics BGA not correctly soldered to board.) This time though i work in the only industry capable of inspecting BGAs fro faults, so i can get proof its a manufacturing defect.

Advice, please?

I've been using Windows since I was six, and now I'm thinking of getting a Mac laptop. (In addition to my Windows XP desktop, but I'm sure I'll hate it after using a Mac for awhile...) I've heard from quite a few people that it runs more smoothly, it's good for students, and that the programs it comes with are great. I'm just not sure what I should be thinking of getting... So, I figured you guys probably know better than me, and could lead me in the right direction. =) I'm homeschooled, and so the main things I'll be using it for are the internet and word processing. When I'm not doing schooling, I'll mostly be playing music, (Now I regret buying a Toshiba Gigabeat instead of an IPod, since I don't think it's Mac compatible...) and instant messaging. Nothing too intensive I guess! It would be nice to be able to play DVDs, but it's not extremely important. I spend some weekends at my dad's, which is one of the reasons why I want a laptop. It's really inconvenient to use someone elses' laptop and not have any of my stuff on it. So, the most important thing is that I can have a connection through a wireless router. (Both places use cable modems, and my dad's place already has a wireless router.) I want to buy something used or refurbished, and I'm on a tight budget... So it's really important that it's affordable, and I don't mind if it's an old model as long as it runs decently. Any suggestions would be great, thanks in advance!

It is almost here!!!

Well, six months later, and it comes in two days.

I grabbed myself the 17" iMac with a gig of ram, 250 gig HD, and I even grabbed .Mac.

But today, I find myself looking for a piece of software, but to little or no avail. I'm a freshman in college with a major in music, and I'll be taking a music theory course. I'm trying to find a piece of software (Universal preferably) that will help in me learning it all. I ask that no Windows apps be suggested, as I'd rather not risk the new mac with a Beta program at the moment.

Does anyone have any free alternatives to iPhoto? I don't like how it makes second copies of my photos, & doesn't have as many sort options--I'd love to find something that keeps my photos sorts as they are in the multiple folders they're already in & be able to view them in slideshow form similar to in iPhoto but without all the annoyance & space-hogging by making second copies of each picture & sorting them in the program's own way.

Thanks for any suggestions! :)

Buying the first one...

Hey all, I just joined this little commun, and I have a dilemma on my hands.

See, at this moment I'm typing on a Compaq (feel free to boo and hiss). Over the past few months a friends experience with Macs led me to look at the site and even the keynote speeches. I am blown away by what there is to offer. So by the fall ( my freshman year of college) I'd like to change that into a MacBook Pro with the new Duo chips.

Unfortunately, there is not an apple store in all of Nebraska, and I have no money of which to speak of (and little time to get a job). I'm greatly considering taking out a rather large loan for one, but are there any discounts for one for say sons of military personnel, or what have you? If there is a college specific one, I've applied to the following (in the cut). Thanks for the help Maccers!

I have just recently switched to an imac g5. I don't know why but recently when I download any program such as yahoo messenger it downloads it as an excel file. So, I deleted the trial Microsoft Office that came with the computer but it still downloads everything as an excel file. I'm not sure why it is doing this.

Help?

Errors

I switched about 5 months ago and am starting to get a feel for the Mac. I have a power book G4. Now that I have some experience with it, I've noticed a few things and I am wondering if it is a common occurrence or a sign of bad things to come. The problem I am having is that often (once or twice a day) I get the error "Program Quit Unexpectedly". Does that happen to anyone else? It usually happens in Safari and Iphoto. But it has happened in Imovie and mail.

Simple Audio Recording Software

Hi people, I switched from PC's to Macs a couple of years ago and I think they're great, but one thing I have not been able to find is a simple program that records sounds from an internal microphone. You know how Windows has Sound Recorder? Well I'm looking for a MacIntosh equivalent...I have System 10 Panther and I'd rather use a program that's simpler than Sound Studio and doesn't run in Classic. I've been scouring the internet in search of free software downloads but have been unable to find anything that works, is free, or lets me save my recordings without purchasing the software. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Another one bites the dust.

Well my ibook has died again. This will now be the 5th time it has died. Now apple are claiming that the warranty starts from the date of purchase, and so that the day the ibook died 20th of may is outside of the 1 year warranty because thier records show it as being bought on the 17th! Three days, after all the hastle ive gone through. I am not a happy ratty!
