VID: Andor: Shape of My Heart

Title: Shape of My Heart
Fandom: Andor, Rogue One
Music: Shape of My Heart by Sting
Summary: Follow your heart into the fight against fascism
Notes: Made for my anti-hero square [community profile] vid_bingo. Thank you to all the folks at at [community profile] communal_creators for the encouragement.

I love the theme in Andor and Rogue One of common folks and disenfranchised people rising up to fight fascism. It feels like such a relevant subject these days.
Cassian isn't a traditional hero. He seems almost doomed to fail from the very start. And when we first meet him in Rogue One, he shoots an informant, Tivik, rather than risk his being captured and interrogated by Imperials. This seemingly cold-blooded streak continues and drives home the idea that Cassian is a man who can accept that the ends justify the means. Andor shows us that his original motivations weren't born from idealism like some other heroes joining the Rebellion. Even after he joins up, we can surmise he holds onto that sharp edge of cynism allowing him to be a very effective weapon - one who is also willing to 'burn his life for sunrises he won't live to see'. When Nemik claimed Cassian was his perfect reader, is this what he envisioned?

Hopefully, we'll see more of that journey in season 2. In the meantime, here's a vid about following your heart into the fight against fascism. I hope you enjoy it!

"Tell him... none of this is his fault. It was already burning, he's just the first spark of the fire. Tell him he knows everything he needs to know and feels everything he needs to feel. And when the day comes when those two pull together, he will be an unstoppable force for good. Tell him I love him more than anything he could ever do wrong." Maarva to Cassian via Brasso, ep 1.12

Ohh, this is wonderful! I feel like I could watch it over and over and get more out of it every time. All those spades, clubs, and diamonds! (I've already watched it twice.) Fantastic choice of song, too.

This is so perfectly edited, and the timing and shot choices are so spot-on. So beautiful. I cried.

I almost said "spotted" instead of "edited"! - because of course from a film composer's end, we don't get to muck with the video, we're supposed to make the music match what's going on in the visuals! Opposite side. XD But the way the shots line up with moments in the music and in the lyrics - ah, my heart. ♥

♥ You really nailed it - during my fumbling attempts at vidding, I was heavily beat-oriented, but I've seen vidders (as here! :) ) do amazing things with visual flow/cutting that aren't beat-based; the one I am thinking of offhand (among others) is [personal profile] shati, who almost never cuts on the beat IIRC and it really works.

I'm biased but I think music theory is super fun. :D

musictheory.net has a ton of free tutorials if you like that kind of thing if/when you are in the mood. :) (I personally do better with an interactive human instructor but it's good to have the reference!)

(if you ever have music theory questions, hit me up - if I don't know, I almost certainly know someone who does!)
