'You' is a complex whole of beliefs, morals, memories, customs, habits, and capabilities, to name a few. If those things are involuntarily altered you end up with a completely different being. There's a reason we don't instantaneously fix people-- it wouldn't be them, now would it? People can only remain themselves through conscious change.

If you had something as small as, say, your artistic talent taken away from you, you probably wouldn't feel much like yourself either.
