Subscriber Services allows subscription administrators to view and update aspects of their subscriptions.
You must log in using your account's administrator username and password to use these features:
-
Account
- Account Details (Home Page): View and edit contact details and credentials for your account.
- Subscriptions: A list of subscriptions for your account. These may be trial or live subscriptions. If you have many subscriptions, you can filter them by site.
- Credentials: View and edit credentials for your account. Credentials include IP ranges, referrer URLs, usernames and passwords, Shibboleth settings and library codes. Editing of IP ranges is restricted. To update the IP ranges for your account, please contact us. Please note that usernames must be unique across the whole system, so you may be required to choose an alternative if you enter one that is already taken.
- Account preferences: View and edit your current preferences settings, such as OpenURL resolver and institutional logo.

This page displays key details about your Account and your Account Contact details.
Contact Details can be changed on this page apart from key details that cannot be changed online. If you wish to change these details please Contact Us.
This page lists all Subscriptions that relate to your account. These may be trial or live Subscriptions.
Product: The links in the Product column take you to the live site for that Product. If your Subscription does not have a Status of OK you will not be able to access the site, and will be taken to the publicly accessible pages for the site. If your Subscription is OK you may need to log in using your user name and password, if your account is not set up to authenticate using IP or referrer credentials.
Status: For each subscription, one of the following will be visible in the Status column:
- OK
- an active subscription that will allow access to the products
- Suspended
- the subscription has been suspended because automated abuse-detection has been triggered
- Expired
- the subscription has been automatically expired because it has reached its end date
- Cancelled
- the subscription has been cancelled by hand
- Provisional
- a subscription that has been created and is waiting for your acceptance of the terms and conditions
- Unchecked
- a subscription that is awaiting administrative staff's approval
Type: details whether your subscription is a trial or a full subscription.
Concurrency: details how many users can use this subscription concurrently.
Start/End date: The start and end dates of the subscription during which access will be allowed.
A Subscription can have a number of Accounts associated with it as "Named Users" of that Subscription.
Named Users of your subscriptions can be administered via the Named User tab in the Subscription view.
Subscriptions that you are a Named User of are listed in the "Associated Subscriptions" tab.
If you are marked as Named User Administrator, you have access to View/Add/Remove Named Users from that Subscription via Subscriber Services (subject to the usual Subscriber Services authentication checks). Administration of Named Users via Subscriber Services is limited to:
- Viewing and removing Named Users
- Uploading/Downloading CSV of Accounts
IP Address Ranges
SAMS stores ranges of IP addresses for an Account in CIDR format which enables authorised access to a product site to be determined by the users IP address. This is typically used by institutions who have a subscription with concurrent access and want to allow access from all on-site computers (e.g. a university allowing their library computers to gain access).
All CIDR ranges keyed are converted to CIDR format when the data is submitted. On entry of new IP address ranges, the WHOIS search results for that data must always be reviewed by the user before the data entry is completed. This is accomplished by a click through the WHOIS search results screen.
The system prevents the entry of ranges bigger than /8, and prevents the entry of private non Internet IP addresses. If an IP address range is added which conflicts with an existing account the system returns an informational page indicating the conflicting account and range, with links to edit either account and a display of the WHOIS search for this range.
The following IP addresses are reserved for Private use (internal networks):
- 10.0.0.0 - 10.255.255.255 (10.0.0.0/8)
- 172.16.0.0 - 172.16.255.255 (172.16.0.0/16)
- 192.168.0.0 - 192.168.255.255 (192.168.0.0/16)
Allowed/Blocked
An IP address that falls within an Allowed range will be granted access to the product site provided that both the Subscription and the Product are also set up to allow IP authentication. However, if an IP address falls within the Blocked range for that Account, it will not be granted access.
Username and Password
An Account can have any number of Username/Passwords stored against it. A Username must be unique across SAMS.
There are four levels of users for SAMS:
- administrator
- has the right to make data changes across SAMS Admin and Subscriber Services.
- ip-editor
- has no access to SAMS Admin but has the right to manage IP addresses via Subscriber Services
- ss-limited
- has no access to SAMS Admin and has read-only access to Subscriber Services
- public
- has access to the Product Site only
HTTP Referrer
SAMS can determine authorisation by using the referrer property of a user's HTTP request to a Product Site. Mostly used by institutions providing an intranet page that links to the Product Site. If the user is behind a proxy, SAMS can also use the x_forwarded_for property which most good proxy servers will set to allow the correct referrer to be retained and identified.
Shibboleth Credentials
Shibboleth credentials may be provided for a given Account if desired. If they are provided then both fields will be mandatory. The fields are as follows:
Organisation ID
This is the Attribute that is released by the IdP to identify the institution. This is not
contained within federation metadata and must be requested from the IdP. SAMS checks the following attributes:
- eduPersonPrimaryOrgUnitDN
- urn:mace:dir:attribute-def:eduPersonPrimaryOrgUnitDN
- urn:mace:dir:attribute-def:eduPersonScopedAffiliation
Entity ID
This is the unique identifier for the IdP and should be declared in the metadata associated with the IdP.
In the UK Federation Metadata this
is found in the entityID attribute of the EntityDescriptor node for an IdP.
Library Card
Institutions wishing to provide access for users via their Library Card IDs can do so by setting up a Library Card Mask and optionally a Library Code.
Library Card Mask
This is a pattern that allows multiple Library Card IDs to be matched against a single Subscription.
- \d - matches a single digit
- \w - matches a single upper or lower case letter or underscore
- \c - matches any permitted symbol
For example, the pattern
1234\d\d\d-567\c\w\w\w would match any of the following Library Card IDs:
- 1234678-567@abc
- 1234345-567?xyz
- 1234876-567*def
Library Code
Since different Libraries may share a Library Card ID format, a Library Code can also be defined to identify a specific Library. Both Subscription and Product must be set up to enforce Library Code. If a Library Code is then also supplied with the Library Card Mask at Authentication, then both must match the values stored against the Account. Note that Library Code is an exact match, not a pattern.
International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC)
There are three reports available:
- Single Period Breakdown: Shows usage statistics over a specified period.
- Monthly Breakdown: Shows statistics in monthly periods over a specified timescale.
- Access Types Breakdown: Shows usage statistics broken down by service and access type (username, IP address, etc.)
ICOLC usage reports are available on a monthly basis to subscribing institutions and library consortia and show the following information:
- Number of Sessions: The total number of unique sessions. Where users have cookies enabled, a session is an uninterrupted period of use of a site; it does not equal the number of unique users since a given person can have multiple sessions. A user-session will be terminated if there is more than fifteen minutes of inactivity.
- Total Session Time (hh:mm): The total time of all sessions added together.
- Average Session Time: The total session time divided by the number of sessions.
- Average Pages per Session: The number of web pages requested divided by the number of sessions.
- Full-Content Units Requested: The number of entries viewed. For long articles split into sections, each section counts as a separate 'content unit'.
- Web Pages Requested: The number of HTML pages accessed.
- Hits: The number of files served, i.e. counts all the images and other files on a page, plus all HTML pages.
- Queries (Searches): The number of times a search request is submitted to the server. Any subsequent activity to review or browse among the records retrieved, or to view an entry from the list, is not recorded as an additional search.
- Full-Content Units Reached from Browse: The number of entries reached from the browse menu. Please note, this is not relevant to all products.
- Turnaways: If a subscription is limited by concurrency, the number of turnaways will indicate how often the concurrency limit has been exceeded and users barred from the product.
COUNTER Reports
A brief summary of the available COUNTER reports:
- Platform contains the name of the platform on which each title is published.
- ISSN only contains the International Standard Serial Number if the title is part of a series which has an ISSN.
- A successful request is classed as any request with a return code of 200 or 304
- A Session starts when the user logs on and consists of all activity until the session ends, either deliberately by the user or timed out due to inactivity

COUNTER 4 Glossaries for more details.
