Manhattan Love Story

So we have complicated love triangles, love squares ..but alas, this drama has the ultimate love web of doom. In actuality, it somewhat mocks and ridicules love 'triangles' as a whole.

Manhattan Love Story isn't a drama to be taken seriously. It's for pure unique amusement. When the main protagonist 'Tencho', portrayed by TOKIO's Matsuoka Masahiro ♥ AKA Mabo), is the coffee shop's owner who is ONLY passionate about coffee and caring about whether his customers drink it, what do you expect? Little by little, Tencho finds himself listening in on his regular customers and slowly becoming involved in the complicated love web that brews in his shop...

This beats all love triangles. See? Coffee's even in the middle of it all! And when you think you've got it all figured out, another person jumps on the train of the twisted romance web.

After each episode you watch, you get accustomed to the regular customers/characters and either warm up, get frustrated or laugh at them. Despite this drama not being set in the typical high school or having a flashy hot cast (then again, they're flashy in their own ways), it's a really great watch. Since the cast are mainly regulars that go to 'Manhattan' (the name of the shop), their ages are all different. Not to mention, the character development was very good.

It's very heart-warming when you stumble across these dramas once in a while. :)

MANHATTAN LOVE STORY
Starring: Matsuoka Masahiro; Koizumi Kyoko; Oikawa Mitsuhiro; Morishita Aiko; Matsuo Suzuki; Sakai Wakana; Funakoshi Eeichiro; Tsukamoto Takashi {2003}

'Manhattan' is this coffee shop - the main setting of this drama.

Where Tencho resides, works and puts his heart into brewing his coffees for customers

Who usually are there just to hang out, or to order something else much to Tencho's disatisfaction. Although Tencho mutters hardly any words, his actions, eye-bulging and breaking of cups show his feeling - oh, and his passionate narration ;)

And this is Akabane-san (Koizumi Kyoko). She is a female taxi driver who is very straight-forward, hot tempered and is someone who shouldn't be messed with...

And Besshi (Oikawa Mitsuhiro) who is a choreographer. I never could see past his character because he reminded me of one of my good friend's best friend who looks like a younger version of him.

Basically, he hops in Akabane's taxi and is on the phone, ignoring her most of the time when she asks where he wants to go. To cut things short, he leaves his phone in her taxi and she's not very happy about it. Besshi asks her to go to 'Manhattan' to meet up so she can give his phone back to him.

Heh. If only it were that easy. They started off at the wrong foot, so Akabane dresses pretty and gets revenge.

Yet she ends up crushing on him? :O

As for the other regular customers, they include drama script author Chikura (Morishita Aiko) & Doigaki Satoshi (Matsuo Suzuki) who works as a voice actor.

Plus Shinobu (Tsukamoto Takashi) who is Tencho's treasured only employee, and Emoto (Sakai Wakana) the weather girl. I fond Shinobu so amusing!

This drama was adorable in many ways. Each character has their own back story, but it's their interaction that makes this drama. Their personalities, perception of love and comedic moments are worth it. I also mustn't forget to mention Tencho's tradition for saving the day - Tencho style while lecturing the characters about his lessons of life in relation to coffee ;)

And this is just the first episode xD It's really endearing. If you're in the mood of an old drama because you're sick of some of the new dramas that are on lately, I recommend you to watch this one!
