“It’s okay to admit you missed me.”

Buckley is leaning against the engine, seemingly casual, but Tommy notices the way he keeps most of his weight on his right leg. Tommy notices too much around him. He rolls his eyes and turns his attention back to restocking the truck.

“That would require me to think about you at all,” He says coolly, pretends not to see the flicker of hurt on Buckley’s face before the unaffected mask is back in place, because acknowledging it means too much. Means those times in the storage room was more than just putting a smart mouth probie in his place, means that feeling of anguish seeing Buckley pinned under a ladder truck, and the guilt for not visiting in the hospital or when he was released mean more than Tommy’s ready to face.

“Right,” Buckley says, coughing into his fist and pushing himself upright before nodding to the small group of other firefighters talking near the open door of the engine bay. Michaels is among them, and the way his eyes constantly track up the length of Buckley’s legs and the burn of jealousy it starts in his stomach is one of those things Tommy has been trying not to notice. “I’ll just leave you to it then.”

Tommy steps into his space as he goes to pass by, steers him toward the storage closet down the hall instead. Buckley coughs again when he shoves him back against the shelves. Again, as Tommy works his belt open.

“Would you shut the fuck up,” Tommy snarls. Someone will hear him, come looking. Buckley looks up at him with something close to fear in his eyes and blood splatters across the front of his uniform when he coughs again. Tommy catches him as his knees buckle, more blood spilling down his chin. “Evan!”

Tommy flings the door to the room open and drags him into the hall.

“We need a medic!”
