ning yingying, gongyi xiao, and a bingqiu romantic comedy
Until now, I’ve only ever shipped Ning Yingying with other women, but last night I came across this fanart of Ning Yingying and Gongyi Xiao and its accompanying text, and I feel like my eyes have been opened. They could have such a cute dynamic!! The biggest issue is that Gongyi Xiao is, uh, rather…. RIP, but—
—that made me start to think. Canon divergence AU during SQQ’s grieving widow period? Namely, one where, instead of only running into Gongyi Xiao once in Bailu Forest, and then not meeting again before the Jinlan City arc, SQQ actually keeps running into Gongyi Xiao during that three year period. Also, for reasons, Ning Yingying has managed to talk SQQ into letting her accompany him on at least some of his wanderings. (Maybe because he mistakens her intense worry for him as intense grief for Binghe, and so he gives in because he thinks that the change of scenery would be a good distraction for her?)
In any case, SQQ, travelling with NYY, keeps running into Gongyi Xiao, and feelings start to develop between NYY and GYX—only for SQQ to have a minor meltdown when he catches on. She’s the protagonist’s future wife!! Ning Yingying, how can you have eyes for anyone else when there’s Luo Binghe waiting for you? And Gongyi Xiao, what are you thinking? It’s one thing to be the childhood sweetheart cucked by the protagonist, but it’s another thing entirely to go and try to steal one of his wives out from under his nose! Young hero, don’t you want to live???
Presumably, some sort of comedy plotline ensues. You could probably use this as a jumping off point for a post-Endless Abyss bingqiu fix-it, but I haven’t thought too deeply into how that would work; mostly, I’m just charmed by the thought of NYY and GXY developing cute crushes on each other and SQQ panicking about it for reasons that would make no sense to anyone else involved.
(...Imagine post-Abyss’ Binghe’s reaction to finding out that his Shizun is desperately trying to break NYY and GYX up—for Binghe’s sake. Because he thinks Binghe wants to marry NYY. He threw you into hell… and now he’s trying to matchmake you with one of his most cherished disciples?? But is also running away from you at every opportunity?? Help, this disciple is too stupid, he doesn’t understand.)
