Graphic Novel or Comic: Calavera, PI by Marco Finnegan. This a Mexican-American crime noir graphic novel set in 1920's Hollywood. PI Juan Calavera becomes a ghost/skeleton/dead-man-walking and takes on the cops and wealthy. Gritty. Dark. It was okay.
Short Story/Novella: The Beat Goes On by Ian Rankin. This is the omnibus of Inspector Rebus short stories, and I was delighted (and admittedly surprised) that Rankin handled the short story format as well as he did. I loved every page.
First Person POV: The Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd. This is the story is set during the American Revolution period in the colony of South Carolina. A teenage girl is left in charge of her father's plantation and slaves. It was recommended to me by a client (since I am from South Carolina) and was a topic of conversation for me with him and his wife (it was a book from her book club) so it served its purpose in that way. The part about growing indigo and preparing it as a dye was the most interesting part for me. It had a lot of white savior vibe and I kind of hated that she ended up getting married in the end to the old guy who was one of the few who were kind to her. I suppose in her case that was the safest option but I wouldn't be a happily ever after for me!
Banned Book: Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe. This is a comic book memoir about a nonbinary asexual person. I felt sorry for everything e went through and sorry that this is a banned book in places. Lots of questions and discussion and reflection about gender and sexuality and sexual orientation. But it just made me sad. I did struggle myself for a long while thinking I was asexual but not sure how all the explicit fanfic I write fits into that definition. I found a definition of asexual which worked for me, but the truth is being old and tired is a bigger part of my life than being queer at this point. And I'm too old and tired to analyze it much.

Any recommendations for: Set in a School/University, no sex/romance, and humour will be welcome. I have ideas for the TBR and blub one.
