so there's definitely a racist component here, you're absolutely right, but part of it is also this:
there are places throughout Africa and Asia that I would love to visit, but as a gay man, I don't particularly feel safe going there with the laws they have on the books, and the cultural climate.
now is part of that a result of colonialism? absolutely, look at those shitass Christian missionaries getting homophobic laws passed in Uganda, utterly horrid people. not to mention many of those laws were inherited from English and French law which at the time was far more homophobic than indigenous law.
but that doesn't change the fact that that is the current legal and cultural climate now.
"I can't go to Africa because I'm gay" is really not a sentiment I should be surprised to hear on here at this point, and yet. All right man, whatever you say.
