- "Huge powerful amphibians, fambaas are born with moist skins and gills, but as they mature the gills vanish and the skin dries and thickens. Gungans make use of fambaas as both beasts of burden and draft beasts for artillery, breeding herds in secret swamp pastures located deep within their sacred places."
- ―The Galactic Explorer's Guide
Fambaas were quadruped amphibians with tough hides[2] that could be found on the planets Naboo and Onderon.[3] They had a tail made out of cartilage, strong joints[7] in pillar-like limbs[2] to handle heavy loads and broad feet with wide toes to increase their stability[7] and stop them sinking into marshes.[2] Biologists surmised that both the fambaas and the falumpasets of Onderon were originally brought there by Naboo merchants, but there was little fossil evidence to back up that hypothesis.[8]
History
Gungans used fambaas to carry deflector shield generators, a saddle and leather girth around their torso to hold the device and a bridle to control the creature's direction.[2] During a fight on Great Grass Plains, faamba with shield generators were deployed with kaadu and falumpasets to support the Gungan Grand Army.[5]
During their Clone Wars insurgency, the Onderon rebels used fambaas to hold heavy artillery.[9] In Abafar, they were used as meat in a dish known as Fambaa Delight.[10] Preigo's Traveling World of Wonder had a fambaa as part of the performance. The beast was abandoned to the Ohnaka Gang when Preigo and the other performers fled a Jedi rescue mission.[11]
Behind the scenes
Original concept sketches of the fambaa depicted them as two-legged dinosaur-like creatures. The four-legged design was approved later, whereupon concept artist Terryl Whitlatch hand-drew its walk cycle to demonstrate to Industrial Light & Magic animators how the animals would move.[12]
