- "This hilt is topped with a crosspiece plated in pure electrum."
- ―Chronicles of the Jedi, on Burryaga Agaburry's lightsaber
Electrum was a type of purple and blue crystal found in the Anoat sector.[2] The crystal could be used as a finish to give weaponry and armor a reflective gold sheen.[3]
History
In 232 BBY,[4] sunlight reflected off a Jedi symbol coated in electrum at the Elphrona Outpost as Jedi Padawan Bell Zettifar prepared for an exercise with his master, Jedi Knight Loden Greatstorm.[5] Burryaga's lightsaber was plated in pure electrum.[1] Jedi Master Avar Kriss's lightsaber had a single piece of silver-white electrum on it.[5] The hilt of Mace Windu's lightsaber possessed a rare electrum finish,[6] as did the lightsabers of Darth Sidious.[3]
The armor and personal F-11D blaster rifle of First Order Commander Pyre also had an electrum finishing, giving them a reflective gold sheen.[3]
Behind the scenes
Electrum first appeared, in the form of the finish of the hilt of Windu's lightsaber, in the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones,[7] which was released on May 16, 2002.[8] The material was first previewed in the trailer for Attack of the Clones,[9] which released earlier in the year on March 10.[10] In the current Star Wars canon, electrum was identified in the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars.[11]
Electrum was initially introduced in the Star Wars Legends continuity in the 1996 West End Games roleplaying guide Shadows of the Empire Sourcebook by Peter M. Schweighofer.[12] It first appeared in Barbara Hambly's 1997 novel Planet of Twilight.[13] In the real world, electrum is a natural alloy of gold, silver and other metals.[14]
In the 2019 video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the player could customize Cal Kestis' lightsaber to be electrum-plated.[15] In the 2023 sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, players could customize the lightsaber, Kestis' blaster pistol, and Kestis' droid companion, BD-1, with electrum-plating.[16]
