    The Aleena were a species of short, sentient reptiles[2] from the planet of Aleen.[1] The Aleena lived on the surface of their homeworld, while the Kindalo lived in the underground, as was outlined in the Aleena–Kindalo treaty that ended their war.[8] The Aleena were part of the Galactic Republic, and their homeworld was home to a Republic relay station.[5] Their government consisted of a king, and during the Clone Wars, they were ruled by an individual named Manchucho.[3] They had a rocky natural habitat.[7] It was known to the scholars of the Galactic Empire that the Aleena were client species of the Rakatan Infinite Empire, though there was little evidence of any occupation of their planet.[8]

    One notable Aleena was Ratts Tyerell, a podracer pilot who participated in the Boonta Eve Classic[9] in 32 BBY.[10] Tyerell perished during the race when he crashed his podracer in the Laguna Caves.[9]

    During the Clone Wars, King Manchucho was ruler of the Aleena people. He welcomed Republic relief forces when they came to assist the Aleena after groundquakes ravaged their planet. C-3PO translated the King's words for clone troopers when they arrived.[5] Tsui Choi was an Aleena Jedi[11] who was active during the Clone Wars and traveled to the planet Kashyyyk when it was besieged by the Confederacy of Independent Systems, riding a can-cell ahead of the battle.[12]

    Shortly after the formation of the Galactic Empire, an Aleena named Fauja resided on Saleucami. Fauja informed clones Cut Lawquane and Hunter about the implementation of chain codes by the Empire.[13]

    In 3 BBY, an Aleena was a member of Skraik's gang stealing ship parts in Garel City on Garel.[14]


    Behind the scenes

    The Aleena were first developed for the 1999 film Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, directed by George Lucas. Aleena was the name given to the species that Ratts Tyerell, a character from Menace, belonged to. Detailed conceptual art was designed by artist Terryl Whitlatch. The art was used to create a maquette for the character, and later, the digital model that would be used in the film. Several other Aleena appeared in the film, and the species reappeared in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. They also appeared in several episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and in numerous canon and Star Wars Legends publications.
