Why This Must Be Read: This story's about Atlantis having seceded and being fully integrated into Pegasus, and an institution of higher learning. Mira wrote a lot of stories in this "cut off or seceded" category, some a lot sadder or angstier, but, written for the "happyfic challenge", this is one of the most uncomplicatedly happy ones. John and Rodney are older, in an established relationship, and welcoming Madison as a new cadet from Earth come to study at Atlantis Schola. It's a feel-good favourite of mine, and a great read.

Why This Must Be Read:

I had a very hard time selecting just one of Lady of Asheru's stories to rec. Please do investigate the link above to all her Jack/Daniel stories, if you enjoy this one. I finally decided on "The Way of the Gods" because it has a charming and fascinating offworld adventure framing her delightful take on Jack and Daniel's relationship. I think it's around 10,000 words. This is an established relationship story, but you can read how they got together in a companion piece that is earlier in the series if you prefer that. Lady of Asheru's writing style is so understated and deft, you just forget that you are reading and get carried away on her seemingly effortless stream of prose. She has such a light touch, and a sense of humor that captures Sam, Teal'c, Jack and Daniel through their dialog and the way they react to situations. She has also thought of some plot twists I have seen nowhere else, including the plot of this particular story. All her work is worth reading if you enjoy Jack/Daniel, and I have reread her work many times. This story was posted back in 2002, which makes her part of the huge and influential "second wave", by my reckoning, of the SG-1 fandom.

Why this must be read: This is part of Taste’s Gifts series, which is well worth reading. But it stands on its own, so you don’t have to worry about reading the other stories first.

Whenever I think of SGA crossovers, this is the first fic that pops into my head. Essentially, it drops Steve, Danny, John and Rodney into a jungle on another planet so that they can be hunted by the Predators from the movie of the same name. They have to learn to trust each other, and trust in their Gifts (for example, Steve can turn invisible) if they’re going to survive long enough to get back home. It’s brutal stuff, but so well written.

Why This Must Be Read: I stumbled across this gorgeous little fic while on the hunt for the actual fic I had in mind for this post. I'm sure you all noticed the lack of NC-17 in the rating and if you haven't fallen off your chairs that I'm rec'ing something less than an R, that should tell you how much I enjoyed this fic. I had a smile on my face from the opening scene, that only grew bigger the more I read. Kazbaby has captured the hearts of my two favourite flyboys with such care and skill. Humour, longing and the thrill of being out in public without the fear of recrimination and punishment, are believably written and catch at your heart. So if you would like to spend a moment with John and Cam in their unguarded joy, "First Step, Faith" will give you that and more.

Why This Must Be Read: At 30+K, this fic is long, but it's an investment of your time that you won't regret. John and Cam are beautifully portrayed as are all the guest stars in this story that, at its heart, is about the relationship and love between two military men, gorgeous in their imperfection and heroic hearts. A complex, yet easy to follow plot, and dialogue that would confuse the reader is handled with a consummate skill that leaves you with a bleeding heart, or laughing so hard you can't see the screen through your tears. An original twist on a tried-and-true fairytale trope that had me hanging of every word.

Why This Must Be Read: I love this fic. Being 13K+ words, Jen's broken it down into Prologue, Chapters 1-4, and a Epilogue, which means you read a snippet between RL obligations; but this does mean that you'll spend all your time wondering what's happening to John and/or Ronon. *hears Jen's evil cackles* The prologue is pure heat, written from John's PoV. It's short, intense and leaves you racing frantically to turn the next virtual page. It's very difficult to create an acurate Ronon voice, but this fic does a fantastic job of keeping the story moving through Ronon's thoughts. Staring at the Sun isn't always cheery, in fact in more than a few places it's dark beyond dark It's a roller coaster ride of angst, hot sex, sheer terror, and the beautiful, mostly-silent communication that John and Ronon share. If you can handle that, then you'll leave this fic with a satisfied sigh and a smile on your face.
