i do think theres something sad about how largely only the literature that's considered especially good or important is intentionally preserved. i want to read stuff that ancient people thought sucked enormous balls

literaryreference

Time to take this post entirely too seriously:

  1. I often wonder if this is why you so commonly see the sentiment that we are in an era of uniquely bad literature, or at least that the fact that most books don't have artistic aspirations and are not aiming to be anything other than mindless entertainment is new. In fact what's new is the idea that everything is worth preserving (and also the internet making it easier to preserve it). The dumb artistically unambitious trash books of the past have survived only sporadically, because people thought of them as literally disposable.
  2. When I was in college I had a professor who was an expert on detective fiction. He had a longstanding beef with the idea that "Murders in the Rue Morgue" was the first detective story. He thought that it seemed way too polished to be inventing a new genre, and also that the whole orangutan business had the vibe of someone subverting preexisting audience expectations and maybe engaging in a bit of stealth parody. With the help of some student volunteers, he went trawling through old magazines and newspapers and found hundreds of detective stories from the early 1800s that just hadn't garnered enough individual attention to be remembered. This was because most of them sucked balls. He created an online archive of them, so you too can read these mostly terrible stories.
tricky-pockets

I've spent a ridiculous amount of time on Project Gutenberg sifting through forgotten old fiction and lemme tell ya. a lot of that stuff sucks ass.

Tremendously comforting, really.

Alabama

Doug Jones

image

Democratic Former Senator Doug Jones has returned to politics to run for Governor. Jones won a narrow upset victory in 2017 against known pedophile and right wing nut Roy Moore to become Alabama's first Democratic Senator in a generation. Before that Jones was the federal prosecutor who finally brought justice in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing. Jones lost his bid for re-election to football couch and stupidest person in American politics (no really) Tommy Tuberville. This Governor's race will be a rematch because Tuberville is leaving the Senate to run for Governor. Tuberville is again amazingly stupid, and also a right wing Trump loving extremist. Tuberville made national headlines by blocking ALL military promotions under Biden in protest against abortion. Alabama has a chance to elect a common sense Democrat who supports its black community, or a racist asshole.

Tom Begich/Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins

Alaska has a unique election system where all candidates from all parties run together in a single primary and the top 4 face off in the general election. There are only two Democrats running and both will be on the ballot in November. Tom Begich was the Democratic leader in the Alaska State Senate. He's a member of a legendary Alaska political family, his Father Nick was a Congressman in the 1970s and his brother Mark a US Senator during Obama's Presidency. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins was a state representative for ten years (2013-2023) representing a rural district made up of islands in Alaska's southeast. Both Begich and Kreiss-Tomkins stress the importance of expanding medicaid coverage, lowering energy costs, and better education for Alaska's kids. If you're voting in Alaska in November remember whichever Democrat you rank #1 you MUST rank the other #2 don't let your vote go to waste!

Arizona

Katie Hobbs

image

Incumbent Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs faces probably the toughest re-election of any Democratic Governor this year. Hobbs managed a narrow win in 2022 over election denier and current Trump Administration official Kari Lake. Hobbs oversaw the repeal of Arizona's 1864 law which banned abortions. Hobbs also used $30 million in federal funds to buy and cancel close to $2 billion dollars worth of medical debt held by Arizonians. She has also acted as an important break on the Republican state Legislature vetoing bills including plans to mandate local police work with ICE. Republicans have nominated Congressman Andy Biggs to run against Hobbs. Biggs was a key co-conspirator in Trump's 2020 effort to steal the election. He was also a key figure in pushing Republican Speaker Kevin McCarthy out of office for not being extreme enough. Biggs used to chair the radical right wing "Freedom Caucus". Biggs would govern from the MAGA extreme.

Florida

David Jolly

Florida has had a Republican Governor since Jeb Bush was elected governor in 1998. In the last 8 years Florida has rapidly accelerated away from being a swing state into being one of the most radical Red states under Governor Ron DeSantis who has made a radical anti-LGBT agenda the center of his government. Moderate Republican turned Democrat former Congressman David Jolly has teamed up with Democratic Former Congresswoman Gwen Graham to run as the Democratic nominees for Governor and Lt Governor. Jolly during his term in Congress was noted for working with Democrats, bucking his party on off shore-drilling, gun control and bring critical of Trump. Jolly is centering restoring Abortion rights, restoring local democracy thats been stripped by DeSantis, expanding medicaid, and actually dealing with climate change. Republicans are backing Congressman Byron Donalds, Donalds is one of the most ideologically extreme Republicans in Congress. He's also a close personally to Trump and his family. Donalds also clearly wants to use Florida's governorship as a jump pad for a 2028 run for President and will lead Florida into an even more extreme direction

Georgia

Keisha Lance Bottoms

image

Over the last ten years Georgia has evolved from a deep red to a swing state. While Democrats have captured both its Senate seats, and President Biden won the state in 2020, its state government has remained stubbornly Republican. Democrat Former Atlanta Mayor and Biden White House aid Keisha Lance Bottoms is running to chance that. As the mayor of the state's largest city Bottoms often served as the voice of Democrats and Black Georgians to the white Republican state government. Bottoms took a stand against ICE way back in 2019, for police reform, and for masks during Covid. She was on Biden's VP short list. She served in a number of top posts in the Biden White House after her term as mayor. If elected Bottoms would be Georgia's first woman, and fist Black Governor, she would be the first Black governor of a Deep South state since reconstruction, and the first Black woman elected governor of a US state. Bottoms is running against healthcare executive and billionaire Rick Jackson. Jackson has already spend over $100 million of his own money to try to buy the Georgia Governorship.

Iowa

Rob Sand

image

Iowa has made a major shift from swing state to deep red state, to the point that there's just one elected Democrat in any of Iowa's 7 elected statewide offices, State Auditor Rob Sand. Iowa Republicans were so angry about their inability to beat Sand they tried to strip his office of its powers after his 2022 win. As Auditor Sand has consistently held Republicans to account for mismanagement and corruption, a number of his investigations leading to criminal cases against local Iowa officials. Republicans have nominated a Republican activist, Zach Lahn who used to work for the Koch political network, till he slept with Chase Koch's wife, broke up their marriage and married the former Miss. Koch. After leaving the Koch's Lahn moved into RFK Jr's orbit and his campaign was heavily supported by "MAHA" Kennedy's anti-science, anti-vaccine, raw milk loving "movement". So Iowa's choice is between a hard working public servant and a weirdo who doesn't believe in pasteurization.

Kansas

Cindy Holscher

image

For the last 8 years deep red Kansas has had a Democratic Governor, Laura Kelly. Kelly was elected as part of the backlash to Republican Governor Sam Brownback's "Kansas experiment" tax cuts so radical they destroyed the state budget and made it impossible for state government to even basic functions like road repair. Governor Kelly has helped expand Medicaid in the state and repealed its Grocery tax. However she is term limited and Republicans are itching to take back the governorship and yet again turn Kansas into a laboratory for radical Republican experiments. Democratic State Senator Cindy Holscher is running to replace Governor Kelly. Holscher is running on cost of living, improving education, legalizing marijuana and using the tax dollars for schools, she's been critical of Trump's tariffs. Holscher's running mate is Nigerian-American State Representative KC Ohaebosim, if elected Ohaebosim would be the first Black person to hold statewide office in Kansas since Edward P. McCabe in 1882.

Michigan

Jocelyn Benson

image

Michigan has been one of the defining swing states of the Trump era, swing between Trump to Biden to Trump again over the last 3 elections. However Democrat Gretchen Whitmer won the governorship in major wins in 2018 and 2022. Whitmer is term limited so the Governorship is wide open in this swingy state. Michigan's Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is running to replace Whitmer. In her role as Secretary of State Benson was a key figure in rejecting Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and steal Michigan's electoral votes. Benson is running on a platform of affordability and building more housing. Republicans have nominated political hanger on and consistent failure, Congressman John James. James ran twice in 2018 and then 2020 for US Senate even though he'd never been elected anything before that, he failed both times. Finally in 2022 James managed to win a seat in Congress. James has consistently voiced his unqualified support for Trump. He also described pictures of Dearborn as a "radical Islamic takeover of America"

Nevada

Aaron Ford

image

Nevada was the only state where Republicans managed to flip a Governorship from Blue to Red in 2022. Incumbent Republican Governor Joe Lombardo won by just 1.5% of the vote. Lombardo has tried to sell himself as a moderate, but one of his first moves as governor was to push a bill making it harder to vote, and he's vetoed bills to protect trans youth's access to care. The Democrat running to unseat Lombardo is Attorney General Aaron Ford. When he was elected in 2018 Ford was the first Black person to win statewide office in Nevada and if elected this year would be Nevada's first Black governor. As Attorney General Ford sued drug companies and secured 1.8 billion dollars, as governor he plays to fight for lower drug costs. Ford has also sued the Trump administration over its attempts to destroy the Department of Education to protect the billion dollars in federal education money Nevada students depend on.

Ohio

Amy Acton

image

This year will mark 20 years since the last time a Democrat won Ohio's Governorship. Ohio's statehouse Republicans are arguably some of the most radical in America. The only thing keeping Ohio from becoming a Texas or Florida level nightmare of Republican activist government is Moderate Republican Governor Mike DeWine. However DeWine is retiring and Republicans have nominated ultra extreme right-wing ideologue and billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy. Ramaswamy helped set up Trump's second administration being co-chair of DODGE with Musk before leaving to focus on this governor run. Under a governor Ramaswamy Ohio would quickly become the most extremely Republican state in the nation speeding past Texas and Florida, with his relationship with Trump many of Ramaswamy's Ohio based choices could have huge national ramifications. Democrats have nominated Dr. Amy Acton to stop him. Acton was head of Ohio's Department of Health during COVID, earning high marks for her claim even as radical republican anti-mask and anti-social distancing protesters protested in front of her house and threaten her and her family. She ultimately resigned rather than comply with laws passed by radical Republicans she felt went against public health. Acton is focused on lowing costs, particularly healthcare costs, for working Ohioans.

Tina Kotek

image

Democratic incumbent Tina Kotek won a brutally close 3 way race in 2022. Now her Republican opponent form 2022, State Senator Christine Drazan is back for a rematch. Kotek is an LGBT trailblazer, she's the first lesbian to be Speaker of a State House, and when she was elected governor she became the first (along with Maura Healey of Massachusetts) Lesbian to become a Governor of a US state. While Governor Kotek has overseen close to $400 Million in investment in building new housing in the state, she supports spending even more to making housing affordable in Oregon. She's gone toe to toe with the Trump administration about its deployment of federal agents to Portland. Her opponent, Drazen was outspoken against vaccine mandates and against trans rights. As minority leader in the State House Drazen lead a walk out of all the Republicans in the name of blocking a climate change bill and other Democratic priorities.

Gina Hinojosa

Texas has had Republican Governors since George W. Bush was first elected in 1994. Current Republican Governor Greg Abbott has been governor for 11 years and is running for an unprecedented 4th term in office, if he wins he will become the longest serving Governor in Texas history. In his over decade in power Abbott has overseen the disintegration of Texas, a failing power grid, failing schools, and environmental crisis. Abbott has focused on fighting about social issues, abortion, immigration, and trans rights, on the national stage. 2026 represents the best chance for Texans to change the direction of the state and put an end to Abbott's dictator like hold on power. Democrats are running State Representative Gina Hinojosa. If elected Hinojosa would be the first hispanic governor of Texas. Before running for the State House Hinojosa was a member of the school board for the massive Austin Independent School District. She has centered improving Texas' ailing schools. Hinojosa is also focusing on combating the corruption that as run wild in Texas under Abbott.

Wisconsin

David Crowley

image

There is no more tightly balanced state in America. Wisconsin is literally rated as 50-50 Republican Democrat. In the 2010s Republicans lead by Governor Scott Walker gerrymandered the State Legislature to lock in an undemocratic Republican majority. Finally after nearly 10 years of work Democrats are poised to finally take total control of state government. However they need to hang onto the Governorship to make that happen. Democratic nominee David Crowley has been the Executive of Milwaukee County, the state's biggest since 2020. Before that he represented the city of Milwaukee in the state house. As Executive he's won high marks for his handling of Covid, tackling affordability, and setting up a legal right to a lawyer in eviction or foreclosure cases. If elected Crowley would be the first black governor in Wisconsin history. Republicans have nominated Congressman Tom Tiffany. Tiffany was ranked the most conservative Congressperson form Wisconsin. Tiffany was Trump's Wisconsin point person in his conspiracy to steal the 2020 election.
