so, i have to come up with a portfolio for a uni interview at the end of may
i've tried emailing and writing letters and applying for any/every casual or crew job i could find aswell as anywhere that looks for volunteers
with no luck whatsoever.
so i'm left lacking a portfolio
i did the summer course at the same place last year which lasted two weeks, so i plan to take some things i did during that
i've also taken it upon myself to convert a super small motorola earpiece/headset to work with a prompt desk partly because they use the chunky over head/ear with a chunky mic style which i find annoy me and feel like they're in my way ... this one i converted is an in ear style bud with an over ear hook and a tiny electret mic (mini condenser like those used to mic up actors) the only similar styles i could find already rigged up with xlr connectors were around £100 so at about £34 its a saving too :) and supposed to be very clear due to the type of mic
(obviously, not having a desk or packs around to test it i'm running on the assumption that it works, but i'm fairly sure it will. living in london i plan to see if i can get one of the theatres around to give it a try if possible)
i've also met the course director a few times thorugh various talks hes done, tours of the uni and an interview i went to last year for this course where they seemed to like me in the interview and suggested i do the summer course they say they are mainly looking for enthusiasm in the subject, i feel more confident about that showing this time around now i've done the course and hopefully having things i've worked on at home will show that too even though i was unable to get "work experience"
do you think this will be enough to warrant a place? and are there any other "projects" i could add myself like i did with the headset? i'd like to have as much as i possibly can on my side for this interview so any advice would be lovely!
I need some gnarled trees, but don't have 100 years. Any ideas on how to create realistic looking branches (don't really need leaves)? They will be used in an outdoor installation and will need to be as weather proof as possible. They will need to be fairly large (think actual tree size) and it's preferably low budget.
Sorry for the ad-like post, but there is free shipping at Stagehand Tees for orders over $50, just barely in time for the holidays. I thought some people here might be interested, otherwise I wouldn't post something resembling an ad. Use the coupon code FREESHIP1
So the time has come for me to invest in some sort of knife. I currently have two debates going on in my head, 1) multi-tool or knife and 2) should I get LeatherMan or Gerber? Any comments, suggestions, opinions, or tips would be great. Oh, and if it makes any difference I'm currently an electrician going on to lighting design.
Hey, anyone out there have a set of plans or know of a good site containing plans for a star trap? I've never built one, but I have a director who wants one...
We can't afford hydraulics - it'll most likely be a counterweight elevator...
Hey all. I'm new here and looking for a little help/direction and was hoping someone could help me out a little.
My name is Rebecca, I'm 27, I live in Minneapolis, and I have almost no experience with anything techie related. I had the acting bug as a kid and did a lot of plays and musicals, and I even went to an arts high school as a theatre major. However, shortly after that, I basically cut theatre out of my life. I assistant stage managed a couple shows in college, but I fully admit, I did almost nothing for those jobs, so I didn't learn a whole lot about the process.
Now, 9 years after the last play I was in and 6 years after the last show I was involved in in any way, I have a HUGE itch to get back involved in theatre, only this time, on the technical side. I'm looking at this for both personal enjoyment and possibly as a career move. Only I'm not sure where to begin.
Does anyone have any advice for me? Should I be looking into school programs? I already have a BA and even an MA, but in completely unrelated fields. Should I be looking for theatres that will take on someone with little experience and give them training? If so, how would I best find these opportunities? I don't know what area of tech I'm most interested in. My inclination is to say stage management (organization and research are two of my strengths) but for all I know, I would absolutely love costume design or set design or lighting or who knows what else. I just have no idea where to start!
