SSFFS Reunion: Metro Boston Edition

Hello all,

The second annual Boston Metro Area SSFFS Reunion will be on the afternoon of Saturday, July 25th, starting at noon. It will be held at Clement G. Morgan Park, near Central Square, Cambridge, with a rain location of 1 Broadway, Cambridge. We will have a potluck and hang out, play Zen Scavenger Hunt, and possibly play other games or go to a restaurant for supper.

If you are interesting in coming, please reply to this email and tell me, and I will include you in further communications.

If you live far away from Boston and don't want to receive these emails, please let me know that, too, and/or tell me what area you would like to receive emails about.

I hope to see you there!

SSFFS Reunion: Metro Boston Edition Update

For anyone who's not on the email list:

This summer's Boston area reunion will be at Clement G. Morgan Park, near Central Square, Cambridge, rain location 1 Broadway, Cambridge (further details if it seems necessary).

This is a smallish, shady park with a few picnic tables, but bringing blankets would be a good idea. It's a few blocks from the Central Square T station, on the Red Line. Unfortunately there's not anywhere for grilling/fire, and parking may be challenging (park at Alewife and take the T?).

The reunion is on Saturday, July 26th, and the loose agenda is as follows:
Noon-ish: Official start
12:30-ish: Potluck and hanging out
2-ish: SSFFS-style meeting with announcements and Botticelli
3-ish until ?: hanging out, chatting, smaller games
Potentially going to some sort of restaurant for supper.

If you have any announcements you'd like to share, please let me know before that part of the afternoon.

Food: The order of the day is Bring Something You Can Eat and Some to Share, with ingredients clearly labeled. Bring your own plates, etc, and a serving utensil for your dish, if necessary.
As far as allergies, I am aware of (in no particular order): gluten-free, dairy-free, veganish (no dairy/meat/eggs, honey okay), dislike of mushrooms, vegetarian, driving in Boston, red dye #40.
The above list is more of an FYI than a AVOID ALL OF THESE THINGS ALWAYS.

If you are feeling organized, here is a list of who's bringing what in terms of food, games, frisbees, etc.

I think that's the salient information; I hope to see you all there!

I don't promise to post further updates to this group; if you want information about rain location, etc, please send me a message with your email address.

SSFFS Reunion: Metro Boston Edition

Hello all,

I've been nominated to organize a greater Boston area SSFFS reunion. If this is a thing that you would be interested in and potentially able to attend, I would appreciate some feedback on the following points (and if you aren't interested or don't live near Boston, you can stop reading this email now). If you're interested, please let me know by the end of May.

-I'm thinking about a weekend in July, mostly because it seems nicely far away. Are there weekends in July that are particularly good or bad? I realize that many people are probably busy the weekend of the 4th.

-Do you prefer indoors, or outdoors with a rain location? (I am inclined towards a location in Cambridge or Somerville because that's more convenient for me and there seem to be a lot of Smithies here, but if you have strong feelings otherwise and ideas of potential locations, go ahead and suggest them.)

-What happens at your ideal SSFFS reunion? I'm thinking some portion of an afternoon is likely to be most accessible for the most people. Food: Tea, potluck, restaurant meal, just snacks, none? Is it hanging out and chatting/crafting/board gaming/whatever, something more organized like a traditional SSFFS meeting (I've had a vote for Botticelli and will take other suggestions), some hybrid of some of the above?

-If it's scheduled at a time you're available, how likely are you to actually come, and how many people are you? (We're not holding out for just SSFFSians or even just Smithies; family, friends, and whoever are also welcome.)

-Do you have transportation or location concerns? (Accessible by public transit, handicapped-accessible, kid-friendly, etc?) Are you deathly allergic to anything (or do you just want ingredients labeled)?

Miriam

P.S. Please share it with anyone who you think would be interested; the email list is far from complete.

Smith Science Fiction and Fantasy Society Alumni Tea

Forwarding from Madam President Tayloe '12 on the SSFFS Yahoo! Group:

Dear Members and Alumni of the Smith Science Fiction and Fantasy Society,

We request the pleasure of your company for tea on Friday, April Thirteenth at 4:30 pm in the Campus Center (room TBA).

In the past few months, we have came across some photographs and documents from former years of SSFFS. While we do not always recognize the people specifically, we do recognize them as SSFFSians -- it seems that in thirty-two years, the character of our organization has not really changed. We hope to gather as many of us as possible to share stories, pictures, and fun.

All are invited, but we unfortunately do not have everyone's contact information. Please forward this invitation to any other member you know!

RSVP at your earliest convenience so that we can make appropriate arrangements.

Sincerely,

The Smith Science Fiction and Fantasy Society:

President Amy Tayloe '12

Vice President Elizabeth Hillis '12

ConChair Cassandra Prager '14

Dance and the Dawn

Hi all,

I have a friend in DC who is working on publishing a LARP project of his. I posted this on my LJ a while ago, and I apologise if you feel spammed. However, I just wanted to send something out because Warren (said friend) is sad that they will not meet their goal for a special bonus project! The project is on kickstarter and can be found here:

http://www.kickstarter.com/project…

You should check it out. It's been described as a "speed dating LARP", and while it might not be your cup o' tea, I know you people know people who may be interested. So spread the word, or make a donation yourself if you feel like it....

If enough people do, there will be a D&D supplement...heartbroken ladies storming the castle where their true loves are! How awesome is that?

There are 8 days left. Please go take a look. ^_^.

Letters and art for students in Japan

Tokyopop is organizing a drive for people to send letters, artwork, etc to students in Japan to cheer them up / cheer them on. I will try to do this. I know how many of you all are interested in Japanese language and culture, and I am encouraging you to do this, too.

Behind the cut is a copy of the original letter from one of the founders of Tokyopop.

Hey gang,

We got a shout-out in the acknowledgments for the Firebirds Soaring anthology:

"Thanks to FACT for ArmadilloCon, HRSFA for Vericon(s), and SSFFS for ConBust."

It's a pretty good anthology, too.

History of the Library

Hello! This is Rocky, current treasurer.

As some of you may know, we are presently cataloging and planning to repaint the library. I'm planning to supplement this project by finding out more about Capen Annex- how old it is, who its first owners were, when Smith acquired it and so on.

If any of you have any information that you'd like to share, that would be great! I'm of course planning to use the College Archives and the Forbes Library.

The Election is Upon Us!

Vote Ellie for SSFFS Social Chair!

Not only am I awesome, but I am also super qualified. I have great ideas for social activities (Host Clubs, dances, games, etc.) and I have already had a hand in the organization of social activities for later this year (obtaining the rights to Dr. Horrible, setting up the SmithSFFS youtube channel). On top of this, I was Social Chair last year and I am part of the Con Triad this year.

I look forward to the elections this coming Friday. Good luck to everyone else running!
