Phoenix A is an ultramassive black hole in the centre of Phoenix Galaxy Cluster, one of the brightest and most massive galaxy clusters. It's one of the most massive black holes we know, having a mass of 100 billion (100000000000) suns. Its Event Horizon is estimated to be roughly 4,000 AU across, about 100 times the average distance between the Sun and Pluto
Phoenix A is located around 8.5 billion light years away from Earth. its mass increases by 60 solar masses every year. Its estimated it formed 10-100 million years after the Big Bang.
The black hole was initially discovered in 2010 by R. Williamson and his colleagues during a survey by the South Pole telescope in Antarctica along with it's hypermassive, Abell class galaxy cluster.
Trivia
- Phoenix A is 25,100 times the mass of Sagittarius A, the supermassive black hole located in the Milky Way galaxy.
- Phoenix A is the equivalent of roughly 15.4% the mass of the Milky Way galaxy.
- If we replaced the Sun with Phoenix A*, all known objects in the Solar System would be inside of its event horizon with no exceptions.
