Belka and Strelka, prior to the launch of Korabl-Sputnik 2.

Korabl-Sputnik 2, launched on August 19, 1960, was the first spaceflight to send animals into space and safely recover them. Joining Belka and Strelka were forty mice, two rats, and various plants. 25 hours after launch, the spacecraft returned to Earth.

Korabl-Sputnik 2 was pivotal in certifying the Vostok spacecraft that would carry the first human, Yuri Gagarin, to space eight months later.

A year later, Strelka had a litter of puppies, one of which, Pushinka, was given to First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy as a goodwill present.

Anonymous asked:

Would you one day travel to the Baltic states?

I’ve already done so in the past. I once spent a month travelling around Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in the winter. And I also visited Tallinn in the summer too. They were really nice. I especially loved Estonia. Tallinn, with its ancient stone buildings and crooked streets, bookshops and bakeries. And then Haapsalu, a small seaside town that is forever in my heart. It has a surviving kuursaal/курзал (resort hall) from the 19th century, which I fell in love with at first sight and long before I knew the world курзал.

I don’t know if I’ll ever have a chance to visit again. Does’t seem likely at this point.
