Legendary Female Idol Otaku
Not a bad day, she thought, faintly wistful, standing on the balcony of her apartment at night, watching the lights of the city, the crowds spilling out from the last train into the chill of the near-winter streets. Behind her, she had left a trail of strawberry shortcake crumbs. A smile touched her lips, as she realised it probably wouldn’t take too long for the cat to find that and clear it up.
Reaching up, she pushed her hair behind her ear with her left hand and looked down at the screen of her phone, one unread message, a string of emoji and words, the sender marked as ‘Legendary Female Idol Otaku of Kagoshima Prefecture.’
Her smile grew my degrees. Even after all this time, she still hadn’t bothered to change Yuki’s details in her phone.
Gently, she thumbed the screen, unlocking it.
‘You still up?’ she typed.
There was a momentary pause, three dots dancing in a row before the reply came.
‘Still up! How are you doing, birthday girl?’
She nodded, as if the other girl was with her, grinning and typing her reply.
‘I’m okay. Just winding down.’ Hastily, she added. ‘I went to Hawaii!!’
‘And how was Hawaii?’ came the instant reply.
Again, she nodded.
‘Good. Good. It’s so pretty there, it reminded me of filming #SukiNanda, it’s that kind of pretty. Maybe a little lonely though.’
There was a pause in Yuki’s reply.
‘Ah. One of those nights, right?’
She felt her cheeks warm with blush.
‘No, no, nothing like that, just... you know... getting older.’
This had been how they had first started talking, through a screen, replying to each other on message boards, aware only of the other as the Legendary Female Idol Otaku of their respective prefectures. It was only when they had both failed the Morning Musume auditions that they really properly became friends, although Sashihara had felt maybe a little envious that the other girl had made it into the finals on TV, whereas she had stumbled right out of the gate.
Still, they had both failed, and that had been common enough ground for friendship—and then Yuki had joined AKB, and then she had been more than a little jealous, a little envious. It had been around that time that the bullying at her school had gotten worse. Realising that she didn’t want to stay in Oita, it had been with Yuki’s encouragement that she had gone to the AKB auditions. At the very least, she had reasoned, even if she wasn’t popular, if she got it, that meant she could attend high school in Tokyo, and everything that had happened in junior high, she could leave that behind in Oita.
‘I’m not getting older,’ came Yuki’s indignant response.
Her smile widened.
‘How does it feel trying to go head to head with all those WACK girls in addition to your juniors?’
‘How does it feel being the big sister to three different groups?’ came back Yuki’s instant reply.
She laughed. This was good, she’d missed this. Apparently, she wasn’t the only one.
‘Do you want to hang out soon?’ Yuki typed.
Once more, she nodded.
‘I’d love to.’
‘Great. It’ll be a meeting of the two Legendary Female Idol Otaku.’
‘I’m pleased you still remember that.’
There was no hesitation in the other girl’s response.
‘How could I not? Your excitement was contagious. You made me work harder to be a better idol.’
She blinked, her vision suddenly blurry with tears.
“Same,” she said aloud, quietly pushing her finger against the screen and typing the word as she spoke.
‘It’ll be good to see you again,’ Yuki replied.
“Same,” she said once more.
‘Morning Musume are holding another audition soon, we can work on our plan to get in this time.’
She laughed, reaching up and wiping away a tear.
‘They’d be lucky to have us now.’
A line of emoji followed, and she lifted her head, slipping her phone into the pocket of her trowsers, and looking out again at the glittering lights.
It was a long way from Oita City, a long way from that awkward junior high school kid she had once been; a long way, she thought, and she regretted not a single step on the journey.
Still smiling, her lips moved as she spoke softly to the cold November night air.
“I’ll awaken your, your, your... Sashihara quality.”
