Unfortunately it never works for me when authors try to sub in their in-universe deities either. A huge part of why “Christian swears” work so well is because we’ve lived in a society steeped in Christianity for many years so they do have the “damn it’s bad” effect on us they’re supposed to have compared to the hours we spend in a book’s universe. When authors try to pull a “By Talos” it actually breaks the immersion for me because my mind immediately knows what they’re trying to replicate and pulls up a “Jesus Christ!!” but not in a “this is familiar🤔” way but a “COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT!!!!👀” way. I know it sounds weird and it’s kinda fucked up because authors are trying their best(and I hate giving Christianity credit for anything) but that’s the best way I can phrase it right now and my mind refuses to take fictional Jesus seriously(I have tried).
