31 Days of the Untamed: rewatch - day 1

So, I have a bad track record with memes, or indeed with any 'running' format where I intend to do a certain number of posts. I stopped doing my Untamed rewatch(along) at ep 20, my fandom alphabet at V, and my 30 days of the Untamed at day 21. (I mean, there were always reasons, usually to do with me getting the feeling that nobody was really interested, but still. There's an unfortunate pattern here.)

But I'm going to give it another try because without something like this, I just tend to not post at all. Or not at all frequently. So here goes [personal profile] jo_lasalle's new 31 Days of the Untamed: the rewatch

1. Your most re-watched episode

I don't actually know. I've watched the first 2 episodes quite a lot due to getting to grips with background stuff. But the more I re-watched the entire show, the less that was necessary. And then I've had times when I watched only the '2nd life' arc.

I think it's probably a toss-up between episode 42, for that moment on the steps of Jinlintai, and the softness of the night at the Jingshi ♥♥♥, and episode 45 because what's not to like about watching them be the ultimate battle couple, with Wei Wuxian fighting zombies in his boyfriend's underwear?. I sometimes just watch these at random for the feel-good factor.

Making poetry from WangXian tags

I want to type up my experience of travelling home (home! I am home!!!) but that's going to be a long post because some crazy shit went down. First, I want to have some fun.

There's a fic on AO3 that has a lot of tags. [personal profile] ratbones started a wonderful meme where you look at those tags... all those tags... and then make poetry.

Each poem must contain exactly 4 tags from this fic.  That's the only rule.

Mine, posted as a comment to her post:

Korean Food
Chinese Food
Fast food
Farting

Chickens
Rabbits
Snakes
Police Brutality

Necrophilia
Tentacle rape
Christianity
Body hair

Collapse )

Come play! Please break the 4-tags rule freely if you have a good one with a different number of tags. Please no serious conversations about the fic or the author, though. I don't know them and haven't read it. The tags are enough of a gift to us all.

December talking meme - Guardian subs (and trans)

I have only 2 questions left after this so I might actually get through it in December.

[personal profile] trobadora said: If you felt like talking some more about your adventures with the Guardian subs, I'd love that! I always found that super fascinating.

/o\ To be honest, it's so long ago now, and I had far more adventures with the novel translation recently...

But what do I remember. Haixing being the starfish. Yashou being Asian Orcs. Me constantly wondering why the Regent was called a Magistrate until I read the novel. Really not knowing what to do with the King... it seemed so weird.

A logistical problem: Guardian has many flashbacks. Finding the locations of those flashbacks and making sure the subs matched... AUUUUGH. Particularly the last Guo Changcheng flasbacks to basically his entire career with the SID. That ate a day.

Okay, one really interesting (to me) thing that I don't think I ever talked about, but which also happens to me with the novel is how... one really needs to do two passes. Or do it in half-hour increments. Because after looking at really weird English for half an hour or so, it starts to get less weird, so you catch less... maybe you still catch the plain bad stuff but no longer catch the stuff that's just not idiomatic. It sinks into your brain, the weird English. I'd go back over some eps I'd 'fixed' and find that really clunky phrases had survived my first pass, simply for being 'not wrong'. You get desensitized. In the novel, I'm up to chapter 101 just now and[personal profile] fangirlishness  is following behind on 81, and while I know for a fact that I did really good work on 81, she still finds thing where I just want to facepalm.

So: two passes needed. (Minimum) [There are currently comment count unavailable comment(s) on the Dreamwidth version of this post. | post a comment @ Dreamwidth]

December talking meme - Japanese food

[personal profile] jo_lasalle said, "Please talk about your favourite Japanese foods!"

OMG where do I start?

I love sushi. Particularly any form of maguro (tuna), but I also very happily eat any roe-based sushi, and I just love the non-cooked prawn stuff.

Ramen. This was a slower way to appreciation but really, there's nothing better on a cold day or after a drinking session. I particularly like the Hokkaido noodles, and my go-to is miso or tonkatsu, ideally with extra spice.

Omurice. Rice wrapped in... omelette. I don't like the normal ones, which have ketchup in the rice, but the ones with butter rice and a hayashi (mushroom) sauce? BLISS! I'm very very fond of eggs. And mushroooms. I  could skip the rice in this.

Nabe. The tragedy of Covid is that this will probably be among the very last things to become safe again. Hotpot, you put your vegetables and meat in a stew, and you or one of the other 5 people around the table will fish it out and eat it. A very communal experience.

Tofu. OMG I LOVE tofu. The silken kind, the firm fried kind you get in agedashi doufu, the Kouya monk kind which has a totally different texture and is like, MAGIC.

Chestnut and sesame ice creams. My heart.

Anpan (red bean bread). Kurumi pan (Walnut bread). Kurimu pan (custard bread).

I want to be in Japan right now, [personal profile] jo_lasalle , this was an evil, evil question. [There are currently comment count unavailable comment(s) on the Dreamwidth version of this post. | post a comment @ Dreamwidth]

Fandom Alphabet M and N

M: Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.

Ohhhh, choices, choices. Akanishi Jin, really truly, but he's a real life guy so maybe that's a bit weird. I just love his quirky sense of humour, his fondness for a drink, and his loyalty to his friends. And his voice. And maybe if he was my friend he'd listen to me and shave.

Okay, of the true 'characters', and ignoring my current Big Four (because while I'd be more compatible with some than with others, I'd of course want them all as friends)... Nie Huaisang? I think he's fun to be around, he has good taste, is up for crazy shit, but also quietly competent. And I could be his conscience. ♥

N: Name three things you wish you saw more of in your main fandom.

I guess The Untamed is currently my main fandom because that's the one I'm writing, or trying to write, in. I'd like to see:

  1. more fic that doesn't lead up to, contain, or reference past weddings (it's a friend's particular squick but I'm getting pretty sick and tired of it too)
  2. more meta discussions on Dreamwidth or at any rate a platform that isn't ephemeral or discussion-unfriendly like twitter or tumblr

I don't ask for much so that is all. [There are currently comment count unavailable comment(s) on the Dreamwidth version of this post. | post a comment @ Dreamwidth]

Fandom Alphabet K and L

K: What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

Right now I'd have to say that's Lan Wangji. My older fandoms didn't really do 'development arc' as such, they were more 'bad guy of the week' type things. X/1999 never got finished, so... *shrugs* And you can't really talk about development arcs in RPF. So that leaves... well, Guardian and The Untamed, and there not much of a contest there.

Lan Wangji starts out believing in All The Rules, believing in black and white, and slowly learns to trust his own judgement over what he's been taught and to accept shades of gray. He grows so much (and at times so painfully). Letting Wei Wuxian take the Wens away from the camp is a major turning point for him; we might wish he'd gone with him, but he's only just really started to question, he's not ready. For him, what he does is already a huge deal.

L: Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves.

Jiang Cheng can be very competent and deserves happiness. :)

December talking meme - betaing

[personal profile] clevermanka asked: "You're such a good beta--I'd love to hear about your first experience doing it. What was the fandom? How/why did the person approach you?"

::blushes from the praise::

You know, I don't remember? I just kind of fell into it, via the S&H mailing list. It was definitely in S&H but I have no recollection of how the first time (or the next several) came about. I'm fairly sure I approached the first person rather than the other way round - you know, someone says 'help, want beta' and I'd say 'I can give it a try' and it goes on from there. I just kind of got known as someone who'll beta your stuff if you ask, and I betaed for lots of writers, famous one and not so famous ones. I was also engaged in lots of other fannish ways in S&H fandom, so I just got pretty well known and people would approach me even more.

Once I fell into Highlander fandom, I was far less engaged, but found I could make myself useful by offering to beta things, so I did. I think the first person to whom I offered was [personal profile] jo_lasalle back in 2002. :)

It's just gone on from there. I've never not loved it; my ideal job (though my current one is close to ideal) would be to be a copyeditor.

Fandom Alphabet I and J

I: Has online caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?

Online what? At any rate, no. I have on occasion ceased to think highly of particular individuals in particular fandoms due to online whatever, but no online whatever can make me stop liking a fandom.

That said, I never did get into Due South fandom properly in the first place because there was a lot of craziness there and I was reluctant to engage.

J: Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over the internet.

It doesn't work like that for me. I have a fandom personal shopper in [personal profile] rheasilvia , and the fandoms she didn't recommend I either found by myself or had recommended by other friends (The Untamed).

December talking meme - memory lane

[personal profile] lunabee34 asked about a favourite memory.

The one that springs to mind first is of an overnight karaoke session in Ikebukuro (I think) with The Gang, where we sang our hearts out from 11pm to 5am, and at some point [personal profile] jo_lasalle and I decided that Eastern Wind by Chris de Burgh (!!!) just had to be sung, and if the damn Japanese karaoke database didn't have it, we were bloody well going to do it a capella. Which we did. Badly, IIRC.

and [personal profile] goss asked about a favourite birthday memory.

Well. :) I don't usually celebrate my birthday in a big way, but when I still lived with my parents and sisters, it was customary that on waking up in the morning and coming out of the children's room for breakfast, the birthday child would get Happy Birthday sung to them and get all their prezzies before school.

So there I was one morning, not quite sure how old I was, maybe 14, 15, 16... and I got up and out to breakfast just in time for everyone starting to sing, and I quickly joined in, racking my brains whose birthday I had forgotten and OMG I didn't get a present for them and why didn't my mom warn me???

And everyone laughed.

In my defense I can only say that Starsky and Hutch were waaayyy more important to me than me randomly getting a year older.
