Another January has been conquered with the warmth of camaraderie, and we are ready to move on to other challenges for the year! It's always a bit bittersweet, isn't it?

If 'Buffy' the movie was the true love of my childhood, 'Buffy' the series quickly became the true love of my teenage years. It was everything I'd ever wanted in a show and more. 'Buffy' quickly became an obsession, and, shortly thereafter, became my gateway into an incredible, insane, indescribably wonderful new world: shared media fandom. -- Seanan McGuire, actual grownup

I would like to thank everyone for showing up for our big, kooky fandom family and spreading light in dark times. You make this community what it is. You increase the amount of joy in the world, just as every lit candle increases the total amount of light in the universe. Thank you for showing up! It means a lot to so many of us. :'D

If you did all the challenges, Bravo! If you dipped your toes into one or two posts: Thank you so much! If you lurked or commented on other people's posts: You are welcome here, too! You belong, and you don't have to doubt that. Fandom is big enough for all kind hearts, and for all sorts of participation. And it's not too late! You can do a challenge you missed later than the end of the month (I know I'm going to, lol). You can comment, congratulate, or look through the wish list post for something you can create. You can read through the comments on the recs post, or look at the challenge responses that you maybe didn't have time for (I'll be right there beside you). And the spirit of the challenge lives on all year, because this community isn't going anywhere. And neither is fandom. We're here to stay.

Thank you to the mods for keeping this challenge going. Every year, they visibly love seeing so many returning and new faces in the comments. (This year I have been allowed to join their number!) And I can say that it is a genuine delight to get to look behind the curtain and see that this supportive community of lovely people goes all the way to the top. Just, deeply good people: good to work alongside, good to learn from, good to be in a community with.

akamine_chan created The Fandom Snowflake Challenge back in 2012 as a way to remind herself “why I loved fandom so much”. Over the years the challenge itself has come to mean a lot to many of us, so by way of introduction some of the mods for this year have written about what

As you can see the challenge means so many things to the mods, and to everyone who has participated before, and will hopefully also be meaningful to anyone joining us for the first time this year. You’ll find us all wading through comments, welcoming everyone, answering questions, keeping the peace, so if you need anything, don't hesitate to flag one of us down.

In the very first year of this challenge, way back in 2012,

akamine_chan said:

I think fandom is a wonderful creation, a society of people who feel passionate about so much—art, music, sports, theater, cinema, television, writing, crafts, social justice, the world, etc. The people in fandom are creative and beautiful and feel strongly about the myriad things they love.

Where we fail, so often, is having faith in ourselves. We've let ourselves be convinced that it's not good to love as much as we do, that we shouldn't open ourselves up to possibilities, that we shouldn't put ourselves out where we can be seen.

So we try to hide ourselves, our talent, our brilliance. We talk down our creative works ("it's just fanfic"), we don't rec our own works, we're shy about friending others for fear of rejection. It's safer, easier to be quiet, to lurk, to keep our heads down.

I want to change that, if only for a little while. I want us to be proud, to be bold, to be loud. To be unafraid, just to prove to ourselves that we can.

The gift of ourselves. Because, in the words of one Mr. Gerard Way, every snowflake is different. That's what makes us special. That's what makes us beautiful.

I've been doing this challenge off and on for ten years and helping mod for three, and I don't think I could say it better than that.

However, for those still saying, "Well that's lovely, but what is this about?" a few words of explanation:

Ever other day, starting on the first and running through the twenty-ninth of January, one of us will post a challenge or idea or prompt. We will also be hosting a friending meme on the thirty-first, to close out the fest.

Participants use your own space to respond to that challenge in whatever way suits you best. If you like, you can drop a comment on the challenge post and link to your response, so that you can share your thoughts with other fans. Please comment, interact, and celebrate each other, as all together we are what make up fandom!

There is no minimum for the number of challenges you have to do. One is a complete acceptable number, as is zero, as is all fifteen. You do not have to do them on the day they're posted, and you can do them in any order you please. You are free to interpret "fandom" as widely or as narrowly as you please, and talk about any kind of fanwork or type of fandom interaction you can think of.
