ACTUAL SMASH BROS DISCUSSION

Today we got a metric crapton (one metric crapton being equivalent to roughly one hella in the imperial system) of Smash Bros 4 news! New fighters! New stages! New moves! New items! Sakurai forgetting his lines and pausing for hilarious lengths!

So here we can discuss where this information will lead, and toss out our wants, don't wants, thoughts, and banana peels.

Spoilers abound!

It's tournament players who want that mainly.

By turning off items and having just a flat stage with no features, it becomes more like a traditional fighting game. Having items, and having stages with extra stuff going on, adds in randomness and the element of chance that competitive players hate, especially when cash prizes for tournaments are on the line. Taking those things out means skill is the only deciding factor in a match. And that's when you get to things like tier lists and that sort of thing.

Everyday players probably won't care about it. I personally will probably not touch it. But I understand why For Glory mode exists: because they want the new game to be viable for fighting game tournaments like EVO.

Speaking of EVO, Melee is still being played competitively, while Brawl never made it to that point. And you can see the desire to change that influencing all sorts of decisions being made in this game, like the tweaks made to certain characters to rebalance them, making alternate forms into separate characters, removing tripping, and speeding gameplay up closer to how it was in Melee.

Agreed, but again, if you're playing for money in a tournament, and you lose a game because a Bob-omb spawned right next to your opponent, then you've lost the game. The fighting game community has its own culture that you really have to be part of to understand. I don't, and I much prefer the chaotic fights in Smash Bros, but I've played BlazBlue, Skullgirls, Persona 4 Arena, and the like enough to have seen it first hand. They take balance and fairness in matches very seriously.

Everyone plays the game differently. And Nintendo is finally acknowledging the desires of people who want to play Smash Bros. as a legitimate one on one fighter.

I agree. But that being said, other people don't like them, so I'm glad they're giving a little something to everyone here.

JUMPING IN HERE TO SAY: As someone who has played Smash competitively, I think it's a real disservice to say that it's merely the items and stages that make Smash uniquely different. The actual mechanics of Smash are unique in themselves - it's not a game based on health reduction, it's a game based on ring outs. It's more of an endurance game than other fighting games. Since your pool of moves is limited, you have to be creative to hit your opponents and get them off guard to throw them off the stage. (compared to the long move lists and myriad techniques to win of Street Fighter IV per character for example, Smash is kinda refreshing as fighting game cause it brings you back to things like spacing and thinking tactically without the complexity of multi level movelists)

That being said, I do hate playing Smash competitively because it is rather joyless (fox final destination no items is circlejerking at its finest, but all characters final destination no items is a lot more fun) but this mode is a long time coming. Nintendo and Sakurai have pointedly refused to acknowledge any sort of competitive scene for Smash until relatively recently and to have these different mode shows that Nintendo is listening to its fanbase, all aspects of it.

Not to mention; with the more in depth way to play using the online mechanism, it wouldn't actually be as, y'know...broken.

I think there's a very hefty chance we will have at least one Mother and Falcon. I seriously doubt they'd dump those which have been around since the beginning. Clones like Ganondorf, Wolf, and Falco I doubt. We also have a lot of Pokemon now, so Jigglypuff I doubt. Other than that, there's still months and months for updates.

Also, considering what they have done with other returning characters? I almost feel like they're tinkering with their moveset and such since they've made big and small changes.

Now I would love to see that.

Hell, with Zelda in mind and the release of A Link Between Worlds? How about Hilda, with moves in relation to the painting-esque themes?

If that were even an assist trophy, I think that would be hella sweet.

I might be the only one but hell if I wanna see them go all the way and have Doc Louis as an Assist.

ps Xenoblade is technically a first-party Nintendo game if we don't get a playable dude I want five million assist trophies and stages (don't tell me this wouldn't be awesome stage music)

One current rumor is apparently that Shulk will be a playable character.
