Mackinac Trip Journal Entry #3

The bakery here in Mackinaw City is open. I told the girls that if I was up super early again I would bring them coffee and donuts, so I've texted Molly to get her and Cheryl's drink orders. They are probably not up yet; I'll just sit here and wait, and if I don't hear from them by the time the donuts are up, I'll bring back four mochas.

NaNo Update

The cushion I built up in Week 2 saw my handily through the Week 3 slump. I am treading water at just about a day ahead of schedule and expect to finish sometime between Sunday and Tuesday.

I am really having a wonderful time writing this totally shameless Mary Sue. Allowing myself to write just for me, with the absolute guarantee that no one else ever has to see it, has been very freeing and a great stress reliever. I think I will do some more of these for some of the other characters I have crushes on over the next few years.

Writer's Block: Tea for two

If you could spend a day with any fictional character, who would it be and what would the two of you do?

YOU GUYS REALLY DO NOT WANT ME TO ANSWER THIS RIGHT NOW. Which is of course why I am going to answer it anyway, obvs.

Suffice to say that half of the 32k words of my Mary Sue/That One Character NaNo so far is sex scenes. Gratuitous, rampantly OOC sex scenes.

The other half, lolariously, is Mary Sue explaining LHC hair care knowledge and answering questions like "What is an internet?" with statements such as "It's a series of tubes" and then bursting into uncontrollable giggles. And the two of them eating Chinese food together. And the reading of Discworld by Mary Sue to That Character. Also sometimes they take baths together, shockingly totally without having any sex in any bathtubs. And she lectures him about how he will never be king and needs to build a bridge and get over himself. And then cunningly distracts him with MOAR SEX. And they watch Firefly.

NOVEMBER IS FOR CRACK OKAY DON'T YOU DARE JUDGE ME

It's entirely possible I fail feminism forever for having a crush on this character. I wish I could say it's all Harry Lloyd's fault for being so hot, because he is, but if I'm totally honest I had a crush on this character the first time I read the book, even though I was fully aware that he was a complete and total asshole. (Possibly partly because I was fully aware that he was a complete and total asshole. This is a problem I have had for a while.)

It is also entirely possible that I have a type.

But if I were going to spend the day with a fictional character that was not the one discussed above, it would be one of the following:

Can I Just Say

That everybody on the Thor kink meme is just so awesome and well-read and shit, I can hardly stand it.

Also, I may have committed myself to writing A) a Viking-age AU and B) a crossover with Supernatural, Star Trek: TNG and possibly Gargoyles wherein Loki hangs out with some fellow Tricksters and pranks the shit out of the Avengers. (Prompt was nonspecific as to how but oh, I have the greatest and most hilarious idea.)

Guys. I think I'm gonna have to watch some Supernatural.

Meanwhile, I am working on a Super Sekrit Crossover involving a character I have decided is definitely Loki's biological mother. I don't want to say who it is, but I am convinced it can be awesome if I don't fuck it up, and the hint is this: he has her eyes.

Once and Future Nerdery

Those of you who know me IRL will probably remember my somewhat half-assed attempt at an elf costume for the ROTK opening. I was supposed to be a sort of rank-and-file Mirkwood archer, but I'm fairly sure everyone at my showing thought I was a poorly-researched Legolas.

Well, now that promotional photos of costumed Dwarves are coming out for The Hobbit, I have decided to try to do better this time.

To that end, I've spent most of today doing a concept sketch and working on a color scheme. I'm doing something loosely based on a cross between Legolas' jerkin and Arwen's flowy grey riding habit thing: a bit more girly than Legolas, a bit more practical than Arwen, and building on some of the design elements of my original costume. When I'm a little further along, I'll upload my sketch and include that and some color swatches in a dressdiaries post (or in a post here that I link to from over there, you know, whatever).

For now, I'll just tell you that since my hair is red these days, I'm going with a sort of "turning leaves" color story.

If anyone knows where I can find a large (at least 3") gold- or copper-toned Elvish-looking barette for a reasonable price, please tell me. I've got a few things bookmarked on Etsy but they're just okay, and if I can find something more toward the "awesome" end of the spectrum I will be pleased. Any stones must be green and/or white. I like aventurine, but that's for personal reasons rather than canonical ones.

Fanfic Raised Me

(Not intended to be a factual statement.)

The experience I am having in Thor fandom right now has brought home to me that--okay, how to put it.

I know there was a time when I would see a movie, or get into a new TV show, or read a new book, and not immediately A) start shipping at least one non-canon1 pairing2 and B) dive headfirst into ALL THE FIC.

This time existed. I know it must have. Newsies was my first real fandom and it was years before I started reading fic for anything else. And then more years before slash became my Way Of Life.3

So at some point, obviously, I would just...watch things? Read books? Just passively consume--I mean, not totally passively, obviously, any story you take in you interact with it if only in your own head, but.

I don't remember what that was like. I can't fathom it now. How do you--if I watch something, and I'm not immediately digging for fic all that night, it's because I didn't like it much.

So I have to wonder--did I have the need, but not see how to fill it? Was that why I so often used to see things five, six times in the theater? Because I wanted more of the characters, of their world, and didn't know any other way to get it?

I mean. Even after I became consumed by the world of fandom, I still did go see things many times in the theater, but it was usually for the purpose of writing my own fic, of knowing the movie inside out so I didn't fuck anything up. And I can't do that anymore, obviously, because of being broke.

But these days, it's almost like-- Okay, so in the beginning there was Canon, right, and I was interested in that, and then I became interested in Fic because it was like exploring Canon in a new way, but now, it's almost like there is Fic and I seek out new Canon because of the Fic that will follow. Like it used to be Fic's purpose was Canon, and now Canon's purpose is Fic.

Is this making sense to anyone but me? Uh, no.

IDEK, whatever. Just know that I am currently rolling around in fanfic like Scrooge McDuck swimming in his pool full of money, metaphorically speaking.

1. I don't get people who read and write fic for canon pairings. I just don't. Your pairing's story is already there. Isn't that enough for you?
2. THOR/LOKI OTP
3. I keep meaning to write a post about this, but I'll just put it here because there's not really enough to it to make it more than a couple sentences: I think I like slash primarily because I almost never see romantic/porny fic with women in it where both parties have sexual agency. That's cultural, and thanks again, patriarchy, but there it is.

Fic

I posted up a bunch of my fic on AO3. This includes All Dogs Go which is apparently on a lot of SB/RL rec lists but has been missing from the web since the archive it was on went away. I can only hope I managed to post the right version and not one of the earlier drafts.
