Prompt 16 - Best
“Night,” Evan said, waving as Reg led him next door. James left them to it. Evan was still a bit unsure of him, and he needed his friend right now.
“Midnight!” James yelled after the cat as it whipped around James’s legs and ran after Reg and Evan. He didn’t come back with Reg when he came back to his flat, and James assumed he’d decided Evan needed him more than they did.
They slept peacefully that night without a furry little pest wriggling around between them.
James got up before Reg, as usual, and decided to make a start on breakfast. He’d decided on pancakes, because pancakes for breakfast always cheered him up. He was just about ready to cook them, having already cut up fruit, melted chocolate, whipped cream, juiced a few lemons, and put the bowl of sugar within easy reach.
“Reg, love?” He whispered, beside Reg’s ear.
“Mmm,” Reg grumbled, swatting at James to make him go away.
“Love, I’m making pancakes, wanna get up?”
Reg bolted upright so fast that he nearly cracked his forehead against James’s.
“Yup. I’m just going to see if Evan wants any. You get up, and I’ll start cooking them.” He didn’t need to tell Reg twice; his boyfriend was up and pulling on a dressing gown before James had even fully stood up.
James knocked on his own front door; a strange notion, but he shrugged it off. Evan opened the door, his eyes sleepy and his hair a soft, wavy mess.
“Oh, sorry, do you want me out? Give me five minutes, and I’ll be out of your hair.”
James couldn’t help but smile at his boyfriend’s best friend.
“Actually, I was going to ask if you liked pancakes?”
“Pancakes!” Evan’s face lit up exactly like Reg’s.
“I’m about to start cooking them if you want some.”
“Er, let me—I mean, yes, of course. I just need to get dressed first.”
“Both Reg and I are in dressing gowns. There’s a spare one on the back of the bathroom door if you want?”
Evan’s face crumpled as he burst into tears.
“Shit. Sorry,” he gasped, wiping his eyes furiously with the back of his hands. “I just can’t believe how nice you’re being to me, especially after the horrible thing I did to Reg and after. You should be doing everything in your power to keep me away from him, but instead you’re making me pancakes. Are you mad?”
James sighed and smiled down at Evan.
“Do you really think Reg would let me get away with that? Reg does what Reg wants, which I’m sure you know, and I love that about him. I love him, and if fixing things with you and Barty is what makes him happy, then who am I to stop him? Don’t you think it would be easier if we all got on?”
Evan nodded, then his shoulders slumped.
“You love him?” he asked in a quiet voice.
“I do. Very much, and he loves me,” James added, not sure if Evan had realised that or not.
“I’m glad. He deserves someone like you. He deserves someone who loves him for him and who isn’t going to…to…” Evan shook his head, unable to go on.
"You deserve someone who loves you too, Evan.”
“I’ve only ever loved one person, and look how that turned out,” Evan scoffed. “No, what I need right now is to be alone. I don’t need to start dating anyone, especially with what’s going on with Pandora. My father is going to be watching me like a hawk when he finds out.”
James nodded, accepting Evan’s reasoning, but secretly hoping Mr Right would come along and whisk him off his feet.
“Well, I’d better start making those pancakes or Reg is going to hold me at whisk point,” James laughed and left Evan to get ready.
He had three pans going so they could all have one at around the same time, and he’d just finished the first batch – not a single one burnt – when there was a knock at the door. He and Reg reached it at the same time, opening it to find someone who was not Evan.
“Barty?” Reg said in confusion.
“Hi, sorry, Effie sent me over with these.” He held up a box filled to the brim with rocky road.
“Right, er, thanks,” Reg said, snatching the box out of Barty’s hands, his eyes darting nervously down the corridor. Barty sniffed the air.
“Are you making pancakes?” he asked almost hopefully.
“Erm,” Reg said, looking to James for help just as the door a few feet away opened, and Evan emerged with Midnight in his arms.
“Evan?” Barty gasped. Evan’s eyes shot up to stare at Barty’s face.
“Barty,” Evan stammered, his arms tightening around Midnight.
“What are you doing here?” they said in unison.
“Oh, for fucks sake!” Reg snapped. “Get in here!” And he grabbed Barty by the collar, dragged him inside, then came back for Evan, who walked in without needing to be manhandled. James thought that the fact that he was still holding Midnight might have been the reason for Reg’s restraint.
“Sit down. Shut up and eat,” Reg ordered, and they obeyed, James getting out another frying pan and adding it to the collection on the stove as he started pouring batter into them. This was going to be a far more intense breakfast than he’d imagined.
