one of my major gripes with the way a lot of people deploy socialization theory is that they seem to think trans women think and act like a typical member of our assigned sex right up until the moment we spontaneously turn trans

mousidy

like it'd be one thing if people were engaging seriously with the concept of socialization as an academic theory, but a lot of people instead just deploy the term as pretext to backfill an assumed backstory onto trans women, like "you definitely Were this way at one point, and I can See the particles of the past still clinging to you when you so boorishly ask me not to walk all over you"

I think a lot of us have the impulse to throw out socialization theory altogether because so many people who don't care to understand it misuse it as a weapon against us. I absolutely get that impulse, but it's important to realize that a transmisogynist's version of the theory is oversimplified and altered on purpose to harm us. what we need is to embrace a more expansive understanding of socialization that can actually account for trans women's differences in experiences and outcomes

yes yes yes yes one million percent i was actually thinking about this just last night to treat ones gender identity as if it is immutable from birth in the same way society treats gender ie birth sex > and that therefore everybody is exempt from socialization / societal conditioning because they were actually fundamentally x the entire tim is its own kind of gender essentialism and is certainly not the lived experience of most trans people certainly not trans women i feel like thats a very scattered way of saying it but yea the whole 'i Know you were socialized x therefore you are automatically y' terfism is stupid and incorrect but it feels like many of the people who were harmed by that way of thinking are overcorrecting to the point of almost wrapping back around to their own kind of gender essentialism its more nuanced than that. but alas 'socialization' has grown to connote 'immutably amab abuser body/brain who has never experienced gender based oppression' transgender transmisogyny transphobia
