Character Information
Name: Merrin
Canon: Star Wars
Canon Point: End of Jedi Fallen Order
Age: 18-19. Her age is never outright stated, but this is the best estimate given she was a young teenager six years before the game begins.
History: Her wookieepedia page and the game summary. Merrin only appears in the last third of the game.
Personality:
The Nightsisters, defined by their passionate loyalty to only their family and no one else, are dead. Once a clan of powerful women, practitioners dark magick only they could control, they were wiped out in a single day by Count Dooku at the height of the infamous Clone Wars. Described as powerful in their evil by outsiders, the truth is the Nightsisters were that but also exceptionally loyal to one another. The sisters expressed love unconditionally, to the point where one of their members returns to the fold after nearly her whole life spent apart and they accept her with open arms. Merrin describes her childhood with warmth and reverence, despite Dathomir being an uninviting red planet dominated by swamps and a dark mystical presence. The story that led to their annihilation is not Merrin's, but she suffers the pain of it. Muffling her cries throughout the slaughter as she hid, when the dust settled the only thing she was left with was the trauma entrenched in her heart. It was the end of her people and the beginning of a new life defined by loneliness, pain and anger.
These feelings and her lone survivor status necessitated the growth of her strength and fortitude. She continued her magick training alone, guided by the vengeful spirits of her sisters that lingered, whispering to her their own want of vengeance. Their goal was singular and destructive, and Merrin was loyal as ever to the only remnants left of her family. For all the years of isolation and loneliness, knowing that those who killed her sisters were still out in the galaxy fueled her. It is what she lived for, looking up at the sky and thinking that if they were ever to return that they would be met with death by her hands. Even when she acknowledged at some point that they would likely never come back to Dathomir, she still prepared for the possibility.
When Taron Malicos appeared, Merrin was too hasty to put her trust in the first stranger she had seen in years. Malicos knew of the massacre and even gave the target of her revenge a name. He was also seeking vengeance and power, something she immediately hooked into as a shared connection. To have someone she could share her anger with, a man who encouraged her desire for revenge, made her eager to believe they were allies. For years he manipulated her anger, made her believe he wanted to help her, and together they ruled over Dathomir. It led to her trusting him with her magick when he asked to learn, a thing so sacred to her she went to the altar of her practice to beg the forgiveness of her sisters for exposing their secrets to an outsider. When his true colors finally revealed, she showed no hesitation in killing him and no remorse in the act. Nightsisters take loyalty seriously and his betrayal cut deep.
In the wake of the betrayal came a new person to latch onto with her trust. Meeting Cal, despite immediately attacking him on sight, was perhaps the best thing that could happen to her. Not only did it show her Malicos was not the ally she made him out to be in her head, but it gave her an opportunity to make a genuine friend. Despite her eagerness to trust biting her with Malicos, she turned that trust to Cal after he shared the pain he carried over the death of his people. Their bond is in their history as survivors, and not based in anger and hate that Malicos and the spirits of her sisters fed. The experience, brief as it was, gave Merrin enough reason to see leaving Dathomir was the only way to live again. To step out of the dark, as it were, and enter the light with other survivors. If the galaxy wanted them dead anyway, then they may as well stay together in the fight against it.
Joining the Mantis crew is an awkward experience, the first time she has been off world and in completely unexplored territory socially. The Nightsisters notoriety still lingers in the galaxy even years after they were annihilated, and Merrin is not naive to why she is regarded with suspicion. She take it in stride and even takes a quiet joy in unsettling her new friends, recognizing quickly how different her life on Dathomir was from normal galatic society. She never goes any further than some gentle ribbing though, aware that they have put their trust in her and she must do the same toward them. Perhaps because of the closeness the Nightsisters were raised with toward their people, Merrin is quick to warm up to the team. Her actions speak an unspoken want to have family again, people she can love and care for without the need to think twice. This proclivity could even explain why she trusted Malicos so quickly, and how he was able to manipulate her to share secrets she otherwise never would. To sum it up simple, she is lonely and yearns for companionship.
Merrin is a survivor and identifies heavily with that word. Dathomir is one of the few planets in the entire galaxy that nobody ever goes to. It is a desolate red planet with little resources, the only life born out of its swamps being giant poisonous spiders and aggressive beasts. Despite all of this, she considers it her home and even speaks of it fondly to others while acknowledging it as inhospitable. While she would never go so far to say she loves Dathomir, she finds inner-strength in knowing she thrived in lands even the bravest in the galaxy would not go near. She will absolutely fight for her friends, and might be too happy to make them should she be given an inkling of kindness. It is a risk to trust, taken willingly as she seeks a life no longer defined by vengeance for her sisters.
Abilities & Skills:
As a Nightsister, Merrin was trained as a practitioner of magick. As most all supernatural energy is connected to the Force in the Star Wars universe, magick is defined as a type of force manipulation strong in the dark side. It borrows its power by taking from life, blood and ritual sacrifice. Dathomir is a very desolate planet strong in the dark side, and it's almost certainly like that with thanks to the Nightsisters sapping the very life of the planet to channel their power.
Using magick is very dangerous however, as the dark side of the Force is known to drive even those with the strongest willpower to madness in the desire for unlimited power. Nightsisters must demonstrate that they do not fear the dark will of their power before even being allowed to learn it. Merrin shows high level proficiency in its use to channel it in a variety of ways, and does not suffer psychological setbacks as normal people would. She enchanted the Nightbrothers with strength, raised her sisters corpses from the dead, buried Malicos alive in the ground by pushing his body down into it, cloaked the Mantis from detection sensors, and pulled Call and Cere out from a deep ocean.
This all shows a broad range of use her power has, which fits in line with the Force as a whole. The Force is described as the energy connecting the galaxy together, all life flowing with its power. Dark side users are described as passionate and aggressive in their use of it, and are often drawn to abuse the power the force grants them in dangerous ways. This is all true for the magick of the Nightsisters, and not all members of the clan were even taught to use this power because of how dangerous it can be.
All of this will of course be taken away in game, but it does speak to Merrin's innate ability to use magic that will aide her as a Witch in the game.
Inventory/Companions: Other than her clothes, Merrin carries with her a large fragment of a broken orb. This orb was once used by the highest ranking witches of the clan as a medium for casting the most powerful magick spells. Merrin used this orb to cast some of her most powerful spells, drawing energy from the spirits of her sisters. Of course in the game it will have none of these features, but it is a nice memento.
Choice: Witch
Reason: This is effectively the title Merrin bears in a galaxy that does not have many who can claim similar skill to her. The ability to use magick is one that Merrin holds near and dear to her heart, as it is where she draws her power from and connects to the culture and heritage of her people. Not being able to use her brand of magicks will be crushing to deal with, but having to learn a new brand of magic will give her an opportunity to expand her horizons and understanding of her innate abilities. She will especially be drawn to the idea of being in a coven again.
