Peace activist Leymah Gbowee (Liberia), President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf (Liberia), and pro-democracy campaigner Tawakul Karman (Yemen) jointly share this year's Nobel Peace Prize. (Just a fortnight after the death of Dr Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to be awarded the prize.)
In an interview last month, Gbowee said:
We put 250 women out. In five days we registered 7,455 first-time voters. We got Africa's first elected female president [Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf] and now we have a whole population of women that will not shut up.
Here's to women who just won't shut up. :)
