if anybody wants life advice… making things for yourself is so important. Like I started making myself blankets last year, & they have helped my mental health so much! For many reasons. First off it gives you something to do that isn’t doom scrolling, so whatever you like doing, like knitting, crocheting, baking, painting, etc. if you dedicate time to that it’ll help your brain. Secondly, it has helped me love myself more in a weird way, bc it’s like, I want this blanket that I’m picturing in my head, and only I can make it for myself, & with every stitch I am reminded that I love my future self enough to make her a blanket. & they really help me see a future for myself because as I make them, I imagine future apartments, living rooms, road trips, friends, lovers, pets—just spaces & people I will one day share my creations with. They’re like my insurance policy for a good future. I keep making blankets because I know one day, I’ll have so many wonderful occasions to use them. And it also contrastingly reminds me that I don’t have to wait to make/have nice things, I can make my living space beautiful now even though I don’t love it all the time. It’s just helped me so much. I think more people should do it.

We’ve all seen story after story about the pitfalls of revenge where characters are chastised for their anger and punished by the narrative. I love how, when asked what she truly wants Ella isn’t allowed to shy away from her feelings, no matter how ugly they might be. There’s something powerful about an eldritch god seeing someone who is actively being hurt and saying “you deserve the chance to fight for yourself and for those who have been taken from you”

Anon, ten years ago gay people couldn’t get married in large parts of the US. AIDS was an almost certain death sentence when I was in high school. I was looking at job boards the other day and found a part time gas station job that had health insurance as a benefit, which NEVER would have happened 15 years ago. When I was a kid, hitting your child was extremely normalized in the US and my parents were the weird ones for not doing it. There is a vaccine for chicken pox. I didn’t meet anyone who had transitioned until my 20s because it was so uncommon to transition in the aughts, and now there are some states that protect your right to have gender affirming care provided by your health insurance. It’s not all states, but it’s better than the number of states that had it in 2010, which was zero. THERE ARE TENANTS UNIONS NOW. WE HAVE A VACCINE AGAINST CERVICAL CANCER.
And all of that has been the work of a lot of individuals and organizations and research teams and activists.

like you do realise that the entire point of set up and pay off is that you’re supposed to pick up on the clues the writers give you right? you do understand that plot twists only work when they retroactively make sense bc there were hints building up to the reveal right??
Some people engage with stories as if it's a competition where their job is to demonstrate that they're the smartest person in the room. These people aren't worth listening to about media.
the thing to ask isn't "was this outcome surprising?", but rather "did this outcome make for a good story?"
