Are you fed-up with garbage, full-of-shit sites where nobody actually communicates, such as Facebook, Instagram and Tumblr? Do you wish your old friends who've migrated to those sites would return to LiveJournal? The the_lj_revival community has been set up with that aim in mind, and you are invited to join it. If you are already on LiveJournal and still have a Facebook profile, and would like to see more people returning to LJ or setting up accounts here, we invite you to post a link to this community on your Facebook Timeline. If you would like to find out who is still using LiveJournal and make contact with those who are already here, you are invited to copy and paste the 'about me' questions on the profile page and post them with your answers to the community.

Temes ... and the Singularity gets scary

I just watched Susan Balckmore's lecture on Memes and Temes.
Behold a completely new take on the rapidly approaching Singularity! I see human beings as emergent on the interface between natural and memetic selection. Now a new kind of replicator, temes, threatens to make all of us wetware beings obsolete. The possibility of friendly mind children has become anachronistic, simplistic, laughable.

It's as if we've already  passed some threshold of information speed and/or volume, so that another dimension emerged. It's as if we've passed a tipping point, silently, on the way toward a Simgularity of the Terminator/Eyeborg takeover variety.

Reality couldn't have more drama than this. Why aren't the rest of you excited/scared?

Hit in the Face

(no subject)

The Singularity is not shiny happy wish fulfillment, it is the coming wave which you can either surf or be drowned by.

A lot of people are going to be drowned, a lot of people will refuse to adapt, and we will think of them the same way we think of rednecks or other non-technological rural folks. Depending on society's willingness to build boats and surfboards (as opposed to denying the coming wave)  a lot more people may be overwhelmed.

Michael Anissimov on C-Realm Podcast

KMO welcomes Michael Anissimov, media director for the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence and keeper of the Accelerating Future blog to the C-Realm to dispel some wholly-headed notions about robots, artificial intelligence, and the possible consequences of their emergence from the space of possibilities into the world of our visceral experience. Topics include the uncomfortable similarity of Ray Kurzweil's Law of Accelerating Returns to Terence McKenna's Time Wave Zero, the very contingent nature of human morality, and the need to build "friendliness" into our Mind Children to prevent them from morphing into our Vile Offspring.

Scientists Worry Machines May Outsmart Man

Impressed and alarmed by advances in artificial intelligence, a group of computer scientists is debating whether there should be limits on research that might lead to loss of human control over computer-based systems that carry a growing share of society’s workload, from waging war to chatting with customers on the phone.

Their concern is that further advances could create profound social disruptions and even have dangerous consequences.

Is it me.

Or has the singularity started?

A slow takeoff one that is...

SSD and solar techs are basically exploding and augmented reality technologies that aren't dumb are coming out this fall.

And we're technically in a recession still.

Hard takeoff by 2016?

Thoughts?
