History

In the early centuries, it was in the Kingdom of Chera. It fell under the control of the Chola Empire in the 11th century. The place was also held under control by the kings of the Vijayanagar empire for a bit in the 16th century.

The area was united in the middle of the 18th century and became the state of Travancore. They had allied with the British. Later, in 1795, a treaty brought it under British protection.
