Sports drafts are a thing used in closed system leagues ( a majority of which are in the United States ) to select players for the league teams prior to the creation of drafts many of those players that came out of college were often free agents or never played at all in professional leagues there are two types of drafts one using a lottery system and one using a performance-based system the lottery system is used in the NBA NHL and MLB while the performance-based system is used in the NFL
