Gameplay

change

Pingus has 77 levels,[3] grouped into 5 'level sets', plus 21 winter-themed tutorial levels. Levels usually must be completed in order. Many other levels, some with very different graphics, cannot be found in-game.

Development

change

The game was first made in 1998. Version 0.6, released in 2003 for Linux, added more levels and a level editor. The next major version, 0.7.0, released on August 27, 2007, moved the game from ClanLib to Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL). This move, which started on February 11, 2006, made it easier to make non-Windows and non-Linux versions. It is also the last version for PowerPC versions of Mac OS X. 0.7.1, released on September 23, 2007, replaced the level editor with a new one. Version 0.7.2, released on October 31, 2007, introduced level sets and added one that is Halloween-themed. Version 0.7.3 fixed minor issues to make the game work better with the GNU Compiler Collection.[4] The latest version, 0.7.6, added Christmas and more Halloween-themed level sets.

In July 2008, the game was moved from the GPL-2.0 license to GPL-3.0.[5]

Impact

change

Pingus is a well-liked game. It was The Linux Game Tome's first "Game of the Month".[source?] In 2006, TechGage named Pingus one of the "Top 10 Free Linux games".[6] CNN and PC-Welt named it one of the best free games for Linux.[7][8] In May 2009, Thinkdigit named Pingus one of the "Most addictive Linux games".[9] In September 2009, Linux For You ranked Pingus 5/5.[10] Reviewing the game for Windows Central in 2017, George Ponder wrote: "The graphics are good, the gameplay is challenging, and overall, Pingus has the potential of being a fun way to pass the time. It just needs a little fine-tuning here and there to make the gaming experience more fluid."[11]
