Ethyl group

An ethyl group is an organic group with one hydrogen atom removed from ethane. The chemical formula is –C2H5. The prefix "eth–" means there are two carbon atoms in a molecule bonded together. The name "ethyl" was invented in 1835 by Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius.
