Well, this seems like as good a time as any to catch up with the show.
I've gotten behind on writing about the show, even though I've been watching every week. But it seemed like I never had much to say after an episode. And then I was majorly confused about a few things, but obviously we've been setting up for the return of Liz's mom for a while.
Let's see... still couldn't care less about the baby. And I was really sick of the Liz and Tom wanting a normal life and planning to get married story line.
Umm, there's no way Liz is dead. The only question is who was in on it, and who is supposed to be fooled by it. I could speculate here, but I won't. All I guess is that if Red wasn't in on it, Tom must be, and that if Tom wasn't in on it, Red must be. And Mr. Kaplan and/or the doctor have to be. Or maybe everyone is in on it and it's a gambit to fool her mother.
On that note, I still think it's unbelievable that Red has this much investment in Liz if he isn't her father. And it kind of looks like he isn't, but in that case, I don't see why cares about her at all. I said that if he wasn't her father, the show had better give me damn good reason for him caring about her, and so far, it hasn't.
I kind of get Liz's complaints against Red, but I kind of don't? I mean, she is who she is, and his entrance into her life might have set some things in motion, but it's not like everything that has happened to her has been his fault. He's obviously kept things from her, but for a sociopath, he's been pretty reliable. BTW, it's especially hilarious that every charge she's leveled at Red can also be applied to Tom (and we don't even know what his deal is, Mr. Brainwashed Method Acting Agent Killing Machine), but sure, yell at Red and go marry Tom.
But basically, I kind of can't believe that the show keeps falling back into this repeating pattern. It's the platonic version of 'UST will they won't they.' Liz gets close to trusting Red or does trust him, and then goes backward two steps. I mean, this is season 3. And she spent the first half of it on the run with him, for fuck's sake. So I thought we were done with the whole Liz hates Red thing. And all I can tell is that he's keeping something from her mother about her?
IDK, I mean, the show has never been great, and I think I've said that since day one, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. But it's kind of wearing a bit thin for me. And now, there's a spinoff in the works (not approved yet or ordered) but that means it would be taking certain characters with it and I'm kind of not crazy about the idea as a whole since at this point I think the show can barely manage to write story lines for itself.

how are they going to manage a spinoff? and why?

I have no idea about the spinoff, just heard that it was trying to happen and would focus on Tom.
If Red was faking, he WAS doing a good job of it. But basically, I keep coming back to: either Red and Tom are BOTH in on it, or only Tom is. Because, let's say Liz is faking her death to get away from Red. She's going to tell Tom, obviously. But if Red was in on it, he would also have to tell Tom, because otherwise, the second Liz wakes up, she's going to go back to Tom, etc.
MAYBE no one is in on it, and Liz's mother somehow slipped her the drugs to make everyone think she's dead, because then no one would be looking for her. But then I suppose Mr. Kaplan would have to be in on it. She did give Red quite a dressing down.
