silverusagi: (xPride & Prejudice 4)

I watched this because I am helpless to resist. Did anyone else watch this? It was, um, interesting. For those not in the know, this is a recently aired miniseries based on a Pride and Prejudice fanfic sequel. I mean, the production value and everything was good, and the story itself isn't half bad, as far as P&P fanfic goes. I'm slightly at a loss as to how this one got selected to be made into television, or if this is going to be a new trend where others get made as well. So, as the title would imply, someone is murdered in Pemberley woods, and then the culprit must be apprehended. There's also a plot involving Georgiana's marriage, and some (apparent?) problems with Darcy and Elizabeth's marriage. I really have no idea where these problems came from, and it seemed very much a case of telling not showing. I have no idea if this is better characterized in the book or not. However, and here is my real problem, these people do not embody Darcy and Elizabeth at all. I have no idea if this is better in the book, but as for what's on screen, I can't even buy these two as an AU version of Darcy and Elizabeth whose family is rocked by a murder suspect. I think both of them were horribly miscast, and the writing for them wasn't doing them any favors, either. Elizabeth in particular is nothing but stern and dour and serious. Darcy could almost be Darcy like, if this were supposed to be Darcy at the beginning of P&P, and not after six years of marriage with Elizabeth. But Elizabeth, I saw no resemblance to her character whatsoever. However, if this were a generic period story, I would probably like it, because it wasn't a bad story per se, but it bore no relation to any of the characters that made me want to watch it, even though I knew it was basically filmed fanfic.

The book is worse, I think. Because she doesn't get the time period any more than the characters; they did a good job to make it seem quite well placed in time.

But it's by PD James, and that's why it gets filmed. Proper author > fanfic author. Even when proper author is churning this stuff out and it's pretty dreadful. *cross*

Yes, she's a grand dame of British detective fiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pd_James). So famous they made her a lady, ffs. Anyway, that would be why it counts as not just fanfic if you are a commissioning editor at the BBC. Even if the book is bad.
