“Demons were one thing, but anyone who’s ever been attacked by a goose can tell you that they’re aggressive apex predators descended from dinosaurs. And unlike demons, geese can’t be tricked, befriended, or reasoned with. If one of those honking bastards was sitting here waiting for us like a drug dealer we owed money, then a fight wasn’t just likely, it was inevitable.”

-Jack Townsend, Tales From the Gas Station Vol. 4

I’m a librarian and I remember almost crying at work one day because of a dedication. It was a second edition of a book and the dedication was in memory of his wife. I thought, “oh that’s sad.” Then I read the dedication to the first edition and it was poetry about how his wife is the most wonderful part of his existence. 😭

when you’re checking the news and it’s gut punch after gut punch, ‘we are so beyond fucked’ type stuff and then there is an article about a truck spilling 2 tons of squid on the road in Rhode Island and you’re like “damn that’s crazy”

“I don’t know if I will ever see peace in my lifetime. I am so scared for the future and so angry at the present. I weep for humanity- 2 TONS? OF SQUID?

You’ve heard of “i didn’t say it was good, i said i liked it,” get ready for “i said it had some technical problems & didn’t fully deliver on its themes, not that i didn’t like it”

elucubrare

#I voiced a criticism of some of its aspects#which in no way implies I did not like it#“and especially does not imply that I would like to hear a defense of it of the form 'shut up and let people have fun'”

Oh, I just realized I can upload videos here! So I made a special one for you. This is one of my favorite paintings -Aurora. And she’s a little unusual because my northern lights are pink. You can see part of the process in the video. I used masking tape to create some of the shapes, fluorescent pigments mixed with a fluid gel medium, and phosphorescent paints that absorb light and glow in the dark. That’s probably what I love most about paintings like this: they never look exactly the same.In daylight, you see one painting.

Under blue or UV light, the colors suddenly change and become incredibly intenseAnd when the room finally goes dark, the stars begin to glow on their own.It feels like having a tiny piece of night sky living on the wall.

If you want to try something similar yourself, I should probably warn you: I used quite a ridiculous collection of materials for this one. You absolutely don’t need all of them. Start with a few fluorescent colors, a good gel medium and maybe one glow-in-the-dark pigment. Experiment and see where it takes you.

Sometimes the most interesting part of painting is discovering what materials can do when you stop using them in the most obvious way.

A little Aurora for your evening.
