I'm going to try and do 15 recs this month - 5 posts with 3 or more fics each. Kicking it off tonight with three AUs that make me smile and make my heart go happy and warm, no matter how many times I read them!

645 Riverside Drive, by smilebackwards. (XMFC, Charles/Erik, PG). Azazel clearly has yet to understand the shattering power of Charles' disappointment, so Erik takes one for the team, grabbing the cup and downing the remnants of the cappuccino like a shot while Azazel watches with morbid fascination.

I pulled out the coffee maker the other day for the first time in I don't know when, and tried to make a mocha. I followed the directions on the bag of coffee, triple-checking my math to make sure it was right - that is an awful lot of coffee grounds! I thought - the end result was, I think, probably exactly the sort of coffee Charles makes in this fic. Except there was no Erik around kind enough to drink it anyway, so it all went down the drain.

Erik's smitten devotion in this fic is just the best, most beautiful thing, because he is so completely Erik through it all. And the cast of friends and lookers-on - Alex, Azazel, Raven - are such a delight. And Charles could not be more adorable if he tried. Read this if you like smiling. :-)

Fundamental Imperfection, by Starlingthefool. (Merlin, Arthur/Merlin, R.) In which an argument about Dickens leads to a Twitter scandal, broken bones, midnight conversations, and transatlantic longing. (Or, an AU with Arthur and Merlin as moderately famous authors.)

Okay, just from the hit count I can guess that if you're in Merlin fandom and you like AU's you've probably read this already! Consider this an invitation to re-read, if so (I just did!) It's just so good :) And even if you're not in Merlin fandom, I strongly urge you to give this a go if you love books, or any of the things in the tags: Literary References & Allusions, Nerdery, arguments are the best foreplay, snobbery, Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Alternate Universe - Authors.

(I know there's a sequel, but it's wip and I haven't read it yet - it's tagged angst with a happy ending, and in cases like that I usually wait til something's complete. /weakling)

No Wonder, No Wonder (Other Half), by Luninosity. (XMFC RPF, James/Michael, R.) In which Michael gets a job in a pub, James has a past he doesn't talk about and is probably not magical, and every good fairy tale earns its happy ending.

James may or may not be magical, but this fic definitely is. Michael is charmed by James and the cottage and everyone in the little village, and you will be too! The descriptions are so vivid and lush, and there are moments that absolutely made me catch my breath.

I love No Wonder, No Wonder so much. The scene with the scraps of paper outside the cottage manages to be funny, sad, and enchanting all at once. Time for a re-read, maybe.

I haven't read 645 Riverside Drive, so thank you for reccing it. I've gotten to the phase where I generally only read XMFC fic if by a trusted author or recced by a trusted author, so my fic consumption has gone down a lot. Good to have something new to read.

Omg, that scene. I love that scene so much! Amazing. One of those moments where I had to stop and re-read before I could continue on.

Yay! Hope you like it!

That was one of the first scenes I wrote for that fic, in fact! I think it pretty much guided the whole thing. :D :D

And also yay thank you! *happy faces* That one's one that I've thought about trying to rewrite into a publishable fic, but then I love it so much as is, with James and Michael as themselves (AU themselves, but still)...

And, oh, Riverside Drive! I have that bookmarked. So cute. Perfect Erik voice.
