Lucky You...NO SPOILERS
Well, I did my part for Eric's numbers this weekend, for hubby and I went to see Lucky You this afternoon. I was feeling a bit uncertain about this one, and was worried about dragging hubby along for the ride--it was especially bad watching the droves of people heading for Spidey whilst we were joined in our little theater by only eight other people--all women, six of them senior citizens. *eep* Hubby said they were there to see that "hot young thing"...Robert Duvall. LOL!
But you know what? We really enjoyed it. Both of us. There's a lot of poker action in it, and sly humor, so hubby enjoyed that. I did too, but there's also the lovely fact that this movie is an Eric pervers dream. Sure, he's not in a leather skirt and running around bare-chested (*sigh*) but he's the FOCUS of the movie. We get beautiful long shots of him entering rooms and walking by and you get to see how he towers over everyone and how graceful yet masculine his movements are. We get to see him running. And riding his motorcycle. And kissing Drew. There's lots of poker playing so that means lots of focusing on his big gorgeous hands, and OMG THE EYES!!! So many staredowns, always those dark eyes so challenging, or glitteringly smug...*gurgle* And then there's the pain behind them when dealing with more difficult family issues. *climbs into his lap and pets him*
Yes, the movie has some cliches. And yes, the romance is the weakest part. Drew is adorable and charming as ever. She and Eric actually have a fine chemistry and I think it could have worked more if they'd had more to do. But the real story is about the character Huck and his life of gambling and his deep-seated issues with his father. He and Robert do a great dance and it's awesome to watch. I think the movie plays well as a character study and an inside peek into Vegas--and the fact that they have real poker players instead of actors in most cases lends it a real air of authenticity.
It's a nice, quiet, enjoyable movie. Nothing explodes, no one saves the world. It's interesting, thoughtful, funny, sweet, moving. I'm not hugely into poker but I found the poker scenes suspenseful and fun. It's escapist weekend entertainment and I don't think anyone would be sorry seeing it. I think the biggest problem this film had was how to market it. Marketing the romance angle I think was a mistake--I'm not sure the blue-haired ladies got much out of it, but I think most guys (who won't flock to see a "chick flick") would have enjoyed all the poker playing and machismo getting thrown around...heh.
So, in any case, I definitely recommend this as long as you just take it for what it is and don't expect groundbreaking lifechanging cinema. It's a cool little flick and the chance to perv over Eric for such a lengthy amount of time was enough of a victory for me. *G*
