The only time a character needs to be a certain race, gender, sexuality, religion, weight, ability, etc is when any of those specific aspects are integral to the plot and/or that characters personal storyline.

Examples: If a story is about coming out then the character(s) should stay that sexuality and/or gender. If a story is about disability then that disability should be represented correctly and not be removed. If the story is about race then the characters should stay the racial identity they are or were written as.

If not; pull a Brandy Cinderella or a Bridgerton. Ripley from Alien was originally written to be a man and yet it works AMAZING with Sigourney Weaver because Ripley being a man does not matter to the story! I love that the proshot of Hadestown worked with Patrick Page’s unexpected injury. They said we WILL accommodate what you need because we want to have you.

I think casting (writing, etc) should be colorblind, gender blind, sexuality blind, body blind, ability blind, etc blind in most cases. If they have the talent and the vibe, the rest should not matter unless it is a vital element to the story!

The default of character does not have to be white, straight, man, thin, cis, etc.

Pro-censorship wattpad refugees drama is so funny to me because when I started using ao3 as a kid I was a devout mormon and I thought that reading anything even remotely pornagraphic was a sin and would ruin my life. So when I was 13 and found ao3 I went "oh awesome I found a fanfic website with a filtering system so I won't ever randomly stumble into porn. This is great! I was really worried about seeing something I didn't want to see on the other platforms." I didn't read any smut online until like three years later. If a mormon 13 year old can figure out 'don't like don't read' wattpad users can too cmon you guys i believe in you.
