Trans women are women first. Trans men are men first. Any feminism, queer politics, or trans activism that belies this point for any reason is less than worthless. Their identities are not lesser, quantity of time spent identifying with womanhood or manhood does not bar you from deeper understanding of masculinity or femininity. A group of 3 cis girls and a trans girl is a group of 4 girls. A group of 3 cis boys and a trans boy is a group of 4 boys. It’s hard for even trans people to believe this deep down, but you have to! Californians voted not to abolish slavery in 2024 because it’s “not economically feasible”

But also beyond that and prison abolition, unofficial (and in some cases official) slavery still exists both in the US and globally. I’ve met multiple Black people, myself included, who have been “functionally” enslaved to specific individual whites even if there wasn’t a legal contract making us their property. In my case, she not only raped me, beat me in public and private, otherwise abused me, controlled my finances so I couldn’t escape fiscally, but also literally hunted me down when I tried to escape her on foot with nothing but my clothes and would use threats of police violence to coerce me into sex and other shit with her.

It’s not just prisons. It’s not just human trafficking. It’s not just capitalism. It’s not *just* colonialism/imperialism/white supremacy. It’s all interconnected and built off the backs of systems that enable slavery and genocide NOW and people simply won’t care unless it makes them sad or affects someone they know personally.

I would like to know more about the functionally enslaved thing because I actually do not know how that could happen.

What a coincidence, I already wrote this out and linked it near the top of my pinned post so I don’t have to re-process this trauma in detail for your curiosity.

Because the US is the center of a global capitalist military-industrial hegemony that goes out of its way to economically, militarily, diplomatically, or via espionage undermine any threat to its empire, all those who live within it are complicit regardless of status, marginalization, or suffering, because we are THE oppressors of the world not a bastion of freedom.

To react poorly to this information on the material state of the world is the same as any other oppressor’s reaction to the oppressed, and when those marginalized within empire do so, we are simply recreating the same dynamics we deride when, for example, a queer white person says they cannot be an oppressor because they are marginalized via their queerness.

All the marginalities, all the suffering, that those who exist within the bounds of the US empire experience are secondary to their presence in the center of a global empire because even those worst off here are still better off than their contemporaries in the imperial periphery.

If having this information pointed out angers you, enrages you, to know that you have a positionality that places you as the oppressor due simply to where you live, then maybe you should start figuring out how to take action in a way that makes it so that the US empire can no longer oppress the world.

And no, I don’t mean fucking “vote”. I mean actually learn and organize—whether it’s with other anarchists, other communists, other abolitionists, or whatever other anti-imperial group suits your ideologies. Don’t fucking rage at those oppressed outside the US Empire for speaking on the material and true state of the world, fucking find a way to act against it instead of venting your guilt and anger at the oppressed just like every oppressor always does.

Like girl we wasnt benefitting from chattel slavery as Black folks but the US began becoming an empire beyond the borders of North America in the 1800s and between the territories/puppet states, global domination of the US petrodollar, the 750+ military bases across 80ish countries, the ability to access broad and specific benefits of living squarely in the center of the empire REGARDLESS OF IF WE CHOOSE TO UTILIZE THEM OR NOT, cheap goods and yearlong access to a wide range of food due to our exploitation of the periphery and semiperiphery?

In 2026 for fucking sure we benefit from living in the heart of empire. The fact that so many of us can’t see the way that every single facet of life in the US empire is subsidized by our exploitation and domination of the rest of the world, no matter how shitty our lives remain as a group or community because much of that benefit goes to the cishet, the abled, the white, and most of all the rich? That we have the privilege of putting on blinders and not seeing the exploitation our every waking moment within the empire is built on, of pretending any of us are exempt, is itself part of that.

So after posting this I decided to look up the median annual incomes/salaries by country because I was curious of the actual degree to which we benefit and. Holy fuck. I knew it was bad but the degree to which even other Western/imperial core countries are worse off than the US is unhinged.

For reference, median is the average when discarding outliers (such as billionaires). Exact median incomes vary by country/year/survey, and racial poverty rates can vary heavily by locale. The 2026 federal poverty level is $15,960 for a single person.

In 2025, the median income in the US was $53,010. By race, it was as follows:

Now I want you to take a look at a comparison of median annual salaries per some countries using most recent available data. This is an outtake of 43 countries, I chose it because it represents solely in USD and doesn’t require conversion, but it does show 2023 instead of 2025 US median for comparison.

First, let’s look at the very top, where the US sits at 5th highest.

Now I’d like to show you the point in the list where the overall median income for each country is lower than the lowest US median salary by race.

Like, France? FRANCE?? We have almost twice the median salary of fucking France, one of the biggest historical colonizers and exploiters of Africa’s wealth and resources??? The lowest median incomes by race in the US are still 10k higher *minimum* than Italy and Spain too???

And now I’d like to show you from the point on the list where the median annual income is below the US federal poverty level.

Mind you, this is from a website that gives comparisons for places workers predominantly from the imperial core may want to move to, this does not include many periphery countries that imperial core residents consider not worth moving to either due to standards of living, political or military issues, climate change destruction, or more.

“But Anonsee, the median isn’t every person, plenty of USians are poor and suffering!”

Comrade the conditions we consider the most horrible and inhumane in the US are just the standard of living (sometimes even higher than!) for portions of the periphery, often explicitly due to the exploitation, intervention, or genocide from the US or other imperial core countries.

Our poor and homeless often still are able to get or maintain access to resources such as phones, cars, medical supplies, etc. explicitly because the positionality of being the heart of the empire makes such supplies so comparatively cheap and the constant flow of goods enable us to access them secondhand. The conditions in places such as reservations that we point to in order to prove not everyone in the US benefits from the current empire are often still better than in many places in the periphery where we suck every resource dry for our benefit, and often don’t have the benefit of relying on diaspora or being within a day’s trip of accessing resources at the empire’s benefitted rates.

Our charity, our mutual aid, our earned income, our suffering, our hellscapes, everything here in the heart of the empire in this modern age is tainted with the blood and the enslavement and exploitation of the periphery from the richest capitalists down to the poorest among us. Every single piece of it, from our joy to our sorrow to our deaths. The fear of losing privilege is not unique to the whites, the rich, the cishet. It is also core to those within the empire who have reaped its benefits through their very survival.

To act like in 2026 any of us within the bounds of the US experience no benefit from living in the empire is a laughable negation if material reality, based on a reactionary assumption that there must be innocents left here. The continued existence of the US empire is proof of our collective complicity.

This is why it is the prerogative of those of us within the US to work in any way we can to end the stranglehold the US holds on the world, even though it means losing the benefits we have lived with our whole lives. Because things can’t stay the same, and the world is dying because of us. Living in perpetual guilt and inaction is useless, and you will not save the world alone, but we cannot keep pretending we are innocent rather than complicit, and we must find ways to take action even if it is “only” on the local or community scale.

Something should’ve started years ago, but it didn’t, so what we have is now. We cannot reform this without maintaining the enslavement and exploitation of the periphery, and that is untenable. We must act to create something new. We cannot wait for someone else to liberate us all.

Black ppl in the US do not hang ourselves, that is something that was done to us way too much by nonblack ppl for us to prefer that as a way to self harm. there have been so many recent cases of Black men, women, boys, & girls coming up found lynched this year alone.

most being ruled as suicide without further investigation. but aint never been no laws or coordinated media efforts to stop hate against Black ppl, no mass organizing done by nonblack on our behalf to protect us, unprompted.

Black people in the empire and outside of it have always, ALWAYS, been the ones to force other groups to pay attention when we make noise for each other and incite action where everyone else is too cowardly & comfortable in their own locations on the axis of white centrism bc their groups not affected to the same degree, intensity, intentionality.

Black people worldwide deserve better than lip service, apathy, & performativity from white ppl and nonblack poc. we deserve so much better than a world organized by and on our exploitation, extraction, cannibalizing, imprisonment, subjugation, villainization, & murder (by intent or neglect).
