We wanted to create a new agency, for a new time. An agency where brutal simplicity of thought was a painful daily necessity. One that was fiercely allergic to bureaucracy and delighted in rejecting the status quo. Where creating dramatic, measurable change was always our starting point. And where people were our most powerful asset, with each person’s personality, competence, and creativity shaping the agency. It worked. The agency launched new brands, revitalized existing ones, boosted careers, shifted mindsets and behaviors, and navigated change. Again and again and again. Over a decade later, and it’s time for Klara and I to move on. We take with us the immense pride of building a new agency – (just) today nominated as Agency of the Year – the joy of having worked with people we love and talent we admire, the support of an extraordinary global network, and the trust of incredible clients. Recently I was chatting to some current students, sharp, hungry, and they were all struggling to get placements. They explained with notable exceptions many agencies don't offer student placements. I know, unbelievable Hundreds of people in the industry have climbed the ladder and then quietly pulled it up behind them. Placements were the lifeblood of the industry. I remember my first placement. Dave, my Creative Partner, and I turned up at Y&R dressed like we were there to sell the building, not work in it. We were welcomed in. And where we weren’t welcome we were at least tolerated. It was a memorable couple of weeks. They won a Ford pitch, they threw a huge party. I woke up on a stranger’s floor. We got thrown into a Häagen-Dazs pitch, I won the Grand National sweepstake, which paid more than the placement. We played five-a-side with the Creative Directors, robbed the stationery cupboard blind, lived on junk, worked insane hours… … and loved every second. You see back in the day, placements were the deal. You worked hard, you got paid peanuts, if at all, but you were in, and that was what mattered. Let’s be honest. If your agency has more than ten people and you’re not taking placements, you’re not too busy you’re being selfish. It’s not complicated. You need a chair, a brief, well, that's it really. And it’s not charity. You benefit as much as they do. They bring energy, ask the awkward questions nobody else will, and occasionally remind you this job is supposed to be fun. The future of this industry is not AI. On Tuesday evening, we won the WTR Industry Award for Best IP Team in the Retail and Restaurant sectors — for the second year in a row. Two in a row! 🤩 I honestly didn’t expect it. When I mentioned we were nominated again, people said, “Don’t hold your breath — it’s rare to win twice consecutively.” But we did. So happy and proud! 🥳 While in London, we met many of our external counsels — without whose support we wouldn’t be here — and I received several spontaneous comments about our team. We were told that we: -always give clear instructions, -never need reminders to provide relevant and useful information on time, -always understand the case — whether it’s in China, South Korea, India, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK, the US, or anywhere else — and clearly grasp the advice given This tells me that our external counsels feel understood, supported, and trusted. That foundation enables them to perform at their best — and since we expect the best from them, we must continue to be at our best too. DESIGNING A HELPFUL STRATEGY EXECUTION TEAM On Friday, our strategy execution leads Frederik Nørrevig and Andreas Wester taught the Round approach to strategy execution to a group of Round employees. This was the first in a series of internal trainings, where we share and discuss Round’s core offerings. The key element in Round’s strategy execution approach is to build strategy execution teams / PMOs that are fundamentally “helpful” to the organization. Very often, execution teams end up in a conflictual relationship to the organization. The key question we have asked ourselves is how to change that dynamic. What we have found from a series of execution projects is that being truly helpful is about the small differences, from having members of the execution team sit physically with other teams – instead of in an dedicated PMO office – to taking time in conversations to see and understand execution challenges from the perspective of the organization. Fundamentally thinking execution bottom-up as well as top-down. We work with strategy execution in a number of different situations, from post-merger integration to implementing a new strategic initiative such as rolling out GenAI or implementing a new corporate strategy. All of these are high-stakes initiatives where the data shows that success using traditional execution approaches is disappointingly rare.

A good piece from McKinsey on leadership in the age of AI and how technology amplifies leadership. We have all experienced how AI can handle analysis, automate tasks, and provide insights but it cannot inspire a team, mentor a colleague, or turn a vision into reality. Those are human strengths... creativity, judgment, empathy, and the ability to lift others up. Technology is our friend, but not more powerful that our actual friends :)

CMOs walk and talk… I spent two days in Copenhagen last week and got the chance to cruise the city with Steffen. Conversations like these are gold. We swapped playbooks on a few things: How he’s upskilling himself and his team on AI (I’m stealing with pride) How I’m approaching CRO and A/B tests on the website (Steffen might need to steal my playbook here) We compared team setups. His is strongly content and product marketing focused, while mine is more of a mix with demand gen, content, product, customer marketing, and ops. We also discussed how much attention competitors really deserve, and how much time is better spent on our own agenda. The answer? Focus on the latter. And of course, we talked about sprints. The ones we run at work. And the ones we run in life. And how to make it all make sense. Next time we might turn it into a proper “CMO run and rant.” Steffen, you’re up for it?
