Atlanta-area Event: Persephonaia: A Celebration of Persephone

x-posted

Persephonaia: A Celebration of Persephone

The Artemis Mounykhia Congregation cordially invites you to our next festival, Persephonaia: A Celebration Persephone, scheduled for September 8, 2007.

Please join us as we celebrate the goddess Persephone as both daughter to the goddess Demeter, as well as wife of Hades and Queen of the Underworld!

We will begin the day with a public libation ritual to both Persephone and Demeter at Big Trees Forest Preserve* at 1:00 PM (as per our monthly libation ritual schedule) and then we will gather afterward for lunch at a nearby restaurant to be determined.

After we finish our meal, we will gather at a member's house for a private ritual and celebration of Persephone. There will be games and other Hellenic-themed activities, culminating in the ritual at 6:00 PM and a ritual feast to follow directly after the ritual. The ritual feast will be potluck-style, so please bring a dish to feed at least 5-10 people. The main course is expected to be a pork and pomegranate dish.

While we certainly encourage you to attend both rituals (public and private), attendance to both is not required. You are welcome to attend either ritual, but please give the coordinator notice if you intend the attend the private ritual so that we may plan accordingly for food and activities.

For more information on the festival, directions to the private ritual celebration, or to sign up for the potluck, please contact the coordinator Laura at laura@sehellenes.org.

ANNOUNCEMENT: First Annual Anadikia Festival - July 15, 2007

x-posted

Hello everyone!

Some of you might have heard of the Anadikia festival if you are on the Neokoroi list, but for those of you that haven't, I wanted to pass the information along.

In lieu of everyone being able to get together on a national or international scale to celebrate a festival, the idea came up of an alternate festival that would be celebrated by everyone who wished to be involved separately, but on the same day. This leaves the festival open to being celebrated by either individuals or groups around the world.

As the Artemis Mounykhia Proto-demos and Eranos, we would like to celebrate this festival here in Atlanta. We welcome anyone to join or, if they are holding the ritual themselves in their own hometowns, then we welcome you to post any details so that we can add them to the SE Hellenes event page so that others might join us/you.

Below is the information from the Neokoroi site as it stands at this moment. Details are still being hammered out on a large and small scale, but I still wanted to go ahead and announce it nonetheless.

I am looking forward to doing rituals with many of you, even if it is only in spirit!

---------------

From: http://www.neokoroi.org/anadikia.h…

We have jointly created a new festival to be celebrated annually as a community - both Neokoroi specifically and anyone else in Hellenismos who wishes to join us. This is still a work-in-progress, so check back for more ideas, fleshed-out rituals, etc.

Name: Anadikia, meaning "renewal of action"

Date: 1 Hekatombaion, or the nearest weekend (July 15, 2007)

Purpose: to honor all groups of gods, to celebrate our community, to ask for blessings in the coming year, give thanks for blessings received, etc. Also an opportunity to worship gods you normally don't, and to divine which gods might want your attention.

Structure: we honor the "Olympian" gods (loosely defined) in the morning, the Nature gods/spirits in the afternoon, and the Khthonioi in the nighttime. These are defined through theoxenia-type feasts for each meal, related to the group of gods honored.

Activities: feasts with full formal ritual preceding each one (procession, purification, libation, sacrifice, etc.), agon (physical contests, chess, board games, darts, etc.), crafts (wreath making, mask making, face painting), temporary shrines built for each group, music played/sung, divinations, ecstatic rites....

There is no specific ritual script for this day, to allow for personal improvisation, but these are suggestions for ways to celebrate, and we will all be doing similar actions at the same times throughout the day.
