"Wink", SGA, John Sheppard & Ronon Dex

I'm doing a terrible job of staying offline! Ah well, I had fun writing this ficlet. Now if only I could learn to stop myself from compulsively editing after I've already hit post...

Title: Wink
Author: [personal profile] scrollgirl
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters: John, Ronon, Lorne, Mehra, Miller, Zelenka, McKay
Words: 313
Author's Note: Written for [community profile] fic_promptly using gaffsie's prompt SGA, John/Ronon, "What the hell are you doing?"

This is the first time I've posted only to AO3 (well, other than the original comment on [community profile] fic_promptly) but I wanted to try consolidating comments in one spot and AO3 seemed less contentious than DW. Hmm.

Gen? Slash? Slashy gen?

On Friday I posted Leave No Man Behind to AO3 and selected the following labels: Category = Slash, Relationship = Ronon Dex/John Sheppard. However, since the relationship is never made explicit in the story and someone who hates slash could probably ignore the subtext, I've decided to relabel it Category = Gen. (I'm still keep Relationship = Ronon Dex/John Sheppard.)

AO3 unfortunately doesn't allow for Bob.

I really hope I don't get comments telling me I should warn for slash.

...WHATEVER IT IS SLASHY GEN OKAY.

sg-1 team

SG-1 = ♥

I must have missed both [personal profile] fignewton's and penknife's recs, but the latter post was linked over at this week's SG-1 Debrief, which led me to an sg1_five_things fic from 2007:

Five Ways It ALL Ended Happily by tarimanveri. Gen, teamfic. "With the Ori defeated and relative tranquility reigning in the Milky Way..."

If you asked me to choose between angsty, sexy John Sheppard-slash and happy, hopeful SG-1 teamfic (assuming the quality of writing was on a par), I would actually have to stop and think very, very hard about my decision. That is how much I love the SG-1 team.

Criminal Minds Fic Archive = grrr

Oh, what, seriously? I wandered over to a (the?) Criminal Minds Fic Archive in search of non-LJ/DW fic I haven't read. So I click on Categories and choose "General" because I was in the mood for plotty gen. (Plotty gen: if you have recs, please link! I live in hope, people!)

I began scrolling through the most recently posted "General" stories and kept running into a thing called MorGar (which I quickly parsed as Morgan/Garcia) that was clearly romance and not gen at all. So I go back a level and look more closely at the categories available, and what the hell.
General [212]
Slash/FemSlash [27]
Challenges [14]
Crossovers [7]
Erotica [22]
Ficlets [34]

Seriously? That's how you're going to organise your fanfic archive? *headdesks x infinity*

I feel like I've gone back in time to 2003. Repeat after me: HET =/= GENERAL. You could argue that het is canon and therefore general, but I still think that's a stretch. (It's why I don't use the "General" category at all. It has no meaning.) Anyway, it doesn't apply to Criminal Minds. If you're talking Hotch/Haley, JJ/Will, Garcia/Kevin, etc, then yes, CM has het pairings--but they're waaaay in the background. Morgan/Garcia is not canon, is not GENERAL. They flirt, yes, but they're friends, the most awesome sexy friends.

Unpopular opinion (on cop shows, and slash on cop shows)

Unpopular opinion: No disrespect intended for those who enjoy Hawaii Five-O or NCIS...

I don't get Hawaii Five-O. I haven't seen either the original or the remake (besides the slashy commercial everyone was posting a few weeks ago) so it's probably unfair of me to pass judgment, but some of what I've heard about the remake pinged the part of my brain that convinced me to stop watching NCIS. I mean, I don't expect cop shows to be totally realistic or even all that serious (see: my appreciation for Castle) but there's something about people carrying badges who get "dispensation" to do what the hell ever in the name of "national security" that makes me cringe and want to run far, far away.

1 I don't want slash in my canon, but I'd love if we had more gay characters. More diversity, period. Go White Collar, for giving us a canon lesbian character!

Masq, you are totally free to say, "I told you so." *g*

ETA: It occurs to me that I can actually get rid of my NCIS icons to make room for new icons!

sg-1 vala glee

I will always love SG-1

Here are two SG-1 fic recs, both gen and team-y:

1) The one where Jack and Vala ended up on Fandom Wank by [personal profile] amaresu. What it says on the box.

2) A Collection of E-mails from the SGC Archives (the Wanky Wormhole Remix) by [personal profile] beatrice_otter. Remix of above fic.

Guys, it is canon in the Stargate universe that Wormhole X-Treme, the TV series within the TV series, has a huge and rabid dedicated fanbase. Which means that Vala being a BNF in WX fandom who writes poorly spelled, out-of-character Danning/Levant hurt/comfort fic? Is in fact very scarily plausible.

♥ Jack and Vala 4eva

Fic rec: Untitled SG-1 ficlet by pepper

[personal profile] paian just recced this, and so of course I clicked to read, and HOMG it is PERFECT. Reading it made me dance in my chair and wriggle with glee! It made me throw up my arms like this!

\o/

If you're an SGA only fan, I still highly, highly recommend it, because you should know these people, they deserve to be known, they should be mandatory reading for new Atlantis recruits. There is no point in joining the Stargate Program if you don't have a sense of history, IMHO. When Teyla first met Elizabeth and asked about who and why and how Earth began to use its stargate, I have to firmly believe that Elizabeth spoke of these people (as well as many, many others) with respect and gratitude.

Untitled SG-1 ficlet by [personal profile] pepper. Nearly gen, but not quite. 1229 words. Like [personal profile] paian, I don't want to give too much away. Don't worry, the reveal is early and made of awesome.

(I'm using my SG-1 kidfic icon, mostly because it feels appropriate--in a way. Because yes, Stargate SG-1 is about generations, about legacy. And that's... all I'm gonna say about that. *g*)

ETA: In other news, I visited my friend S and her family today. It was good to get away from my family and see how other people live ;) Her kids are so adorable, though Gabby was incredibly hyper--I have no idea how S handles that much energy on a daily basis. But Gabby is such a sweet girl, so playful and affectionate. Whenever Alex lost his soother, she would run to put it back in his mouth. And Baby Alex is ridiculously smiley, just grinning big and wide and toothless (he's only 3 1/2 months old!) with big blue eyes that look at everything with such fascination. I adore them both :D

sg-1 team

Fic recs: SG-1 and SGA

As much as I love love playing with the SGA characters, for whatever reason the show will never measure up to how I feel about Stargate SG-1. With SG-1, when I watch an episode that really highlights SG-1 as a team, or that delves into the meat of these characters, like "The Changeling" or "Forever in a Day" or "Solitudes", or I read a gen story that perfectly captures Jack or Vala or Hammond or even minor/one-shot characters, there's just something in my brain that goes, "Yes, yes, that's it exactly." There's a sense of the epic, of the sublime, of history and continuity and greatness when I look at the SG-1 characters. I can't help but love every single one of them.

I don't know why I don't get the same feel with SGA. Perhaps it's as simple as SG-1 having ten seasons versus SGA's five, more time to develop the characters, their loyalties, their relationships. SG-1 fandom might be small compared to SGA fandom, and the fic generally less cracktastic, but there is so much heart, so much blood, guts, and glory, so much faith and hope and we're all gonna die, we might as well go out fighting. (I watched "The Changeling" on Saturday, taking a break from working on [profile] sga_genficathon. Hence my sudden outpouring of SG-1 love. Christopher Judge is a damn good writer. Fireman!AU = ♥)

Every once in a while, I'll read a fantastic SG-1 gen story and remember, this, this is why SG-1 owns my heart. I'm not even talking about grand epic adventures wherein they save the universe in time for lunch--just the little stories that show how SG-1 is a family. And so...

Fic recs! Three from Remix Redux (2 SG-1 gen, 1 SGA gen) and one from SGA Gen Ficathon (1 SGA gen):

1) Best-Laid Plans by penknife, 2310 words, rated General: Five times being on SG-1 screwed up Sam's holiday plans. This little story spans several years, from SG-1 v1.0 to v1.5 (the Jonas edition) to v2.0 (Cam and Vala), and therefore includes mention of canon deaths. It's got "family" threaded through every holiday, a spiderweb of friendships, so that when one connection fails--because that person is gone--there's always someone else to hold you up. Read. Laugh, cry, cuddle.

2) Fair Play by penknife, 3000 words, rated Teen: Five times Vala and Teal'c didn't play by the rules. One of the things I love best about Seasons 9-10 is how much looser everyone suddenly becomes. Don't get me wrong: Teal'c has always had a sense of humour. Ditto Sam. But with Cam and Vala in the mix, they're much more willing to indulge the newbies and be playful without the sharper edge Jack always had. (Not that Vala doesn't have her own sharp edge, but in some ways, Jack is the better actor.)

Anyway, this is a delightful friendship story in which Teal'c and Vala cheat. Just a little. For fun! And also to save their team. There are some classic lines.
"News flash: cake is tasty," Vala says, taking a bite of hers and licking the frosting very deliberately off her fork. She likes to think that Daniel looks at least a bit distracted by that.

"My mama always said I had to eat my vegetables first," Cam says.

Vala shrugs. "Why wait?"

3) Water and the Weight of It (Athosian Remastered) by [personal profile] sugargroupie, 1117 words, rated General: You believe Atlantis to be more of a leviathan. Teyla character study, second person narration, with Ronon friendship. It's lovely and lyrical, giving us Teyla's perspective of the city of Atlantis, and of the Earth humans and their cultural assumptions.

4) Practicing Medicine by kristen999: Jennifer learns that accepting and upholding an oath, requires living it. (6000 words, rated PG.) This is a terrific look at the Atlantis expedition through Keller's eyes, and also through her position as CMO. It's a terrific look at Keller too, and the difficulties of her job, which I imagine would be hard enough back on Earth, let alone in a different galaxy with a war going on. Some nice Teyla-Keller friendship too.

I'll edit this post to include the authors once they are revealed. ETA: DUDE. penknife wrote both SG-1 stories! This is proof that I love her writing for what it is, not because she's popular.
