Scary Monsters is a three piece industrial-rock band based in Buffalo, New York. The members include Aaron (chiz) on sampler and live keyboards, Matt Sauer (Squee) adding guitars and backing vocals, and the incomparable Newt with his unique style of vocals and programming. All three members have served tenure with other local acts ranging wildly in sound, with Aaron playing keyboards for original hard rock band Mergatroid, Matt tending bass for the goth rock band The Hanging Mums, and Newt with the duties of keyboards and vocals in the now post-mortem electro-industrial band Evil Majick. With all members having diverse musical backgrounds, Scary Monsters has the unique sound and the perfect lineup to suit any comparable bill they are added to.
Founded in 1998, Scary monsters was originally an expiremental electronica duo starting with Brandon Pace and Newt doing only a few shows before Matt (squee) was added to the project to play guitars. Since then, the band has moved forward with more structured material and a bigger focus on live performances. These powerful shows have been very theatrical giving the band a reputation as Buffalo's premiere industrial-rock act, with an emphasis on crowd response and participation. Scary Monsters is rarely seen standing still behind their instruments--using everything from a hand-held synthesizer, touch-sensitive effects processors and even a puppet show during a guitar solo! In short, not a single member is idle during the entire performance. Adding theatrical parts to their live preformance helps even more to get the crowd moving with the band. With a large selection of props taking part in the performance, Scary Monsters are sure to get the crowd's undivided attention.
Influences on Scary Monsters include such prominent acts as KMFDM, Ministry, Pink Floyd, and Nine Inch Nails--all the while retaining an original edge to their sound instead of the run of the mill imitators so often springing up. Using a large selection of synthesizers and drum machines and an abundant amount of sample libraries in the studio, the material is mixed to perfection every time, then transformed further with the addition of guitars and other parts as needed.
For the year 2004, the band's lineup has changed, Brandon has left due to differences in the band, though he is no longer with us we wich eachother the best of luck in the future. After trying out a number of keyboardists, Aaron was added into Scary Monsters and the honing of the live set continues to perfect and refine itself. The live dates continue to multiply as Scary Monsters becomes a mainstay within the Buffalo scene, and with pressure building to release their first compact disc, after working for months on end the band hopes to have one available shortly.
