the idea that women are "more allowed" to express emotions than men under patriarchy honestly seems like a lie that serves patriarchy itself.

women are constantly pressured to dissociate from the way our circumstances negatively impact us, and we are straight up not permitted more emotional expression in any meaningful way that is received well in patriarchal relations. in reality, we are marked as "more emotional" and therefore taken less seriously than men.

nobody under patriarchy is allowed a healthy and full expression of their emotions, but framing emotional expression as an advantage that women have is bizarre.

As a woman you are allowed to ::checks notes:: weep quietly, if you can stay pretty while doing it. And you'll still be called hysterical, probably.

I think it's not so much that woman are more "allowed" to express emotions, it's that we're more "expected" to express them. Not expected as in there's an obligation, but expected as it's not a surprise.

Uncomfortable facts of life:

  1. Nobody's going to magically swoop in to rescue you. You can't just sit there and expect someone else to come save you. You have to get your shit together and do it yourself.
  2. About 90% of the time, the "it" you have to do on your own is pushing yourself to walk up to someone else and use your words to say "hey I need help."
  • “protect children” <- reactionary drivel basically every time
  • “be kind to children” <-radical thinking that causes way more arguments than you would ever imagine

the average person thinks of children like particularly delicate houseplants

"I warn you that in times of great economic chaos, especially when people had dreams of affluence that they now are not going to realize-and when they are not able to have even the choices their parents had economically-women are at risk. We will be told, "You were wrong to think you could have it all. You must repent of your aggressive ways, you must repent of your ambition." In times of fear and anxiety people will be looking for false scapegoats, false solutions, and one of those solutions will be that all of this can be solved by sending women home again."

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.

If you consume fanfic on ao3 and are 18+ and American I need you to lock in and call your senators saying you oppose a federal porn ban. This would effectively ban ao3 and being queer in public, among many other things, due to the intentionally vague language of the bill. I’m counting on queer tumblr and fandom tumblr to help me get the word out that you have to call your senators

A script, if anyone needs:

For dems:

Hi, my name is [name] and I'm a constituent from [your address + zip code]. I am calling Senator [Name] today because I am opposed to censorship measures such as those outlined in the Interstate Obscenity Definition Act. In addition to feeling this bill would lead to dramaticcensorship, its broad definition would risk many marginalized people who are already at risk, and it would also make it harder for victims of the industry to seek help for fear of repercussions. Thank you.

For repubs:

Hi, my name is [name] and I'm a constituent from [your address + zip code]. I am calling Senator [Name] today to speak out against the Interstate Obscenity Definition Act and similar proposals. I believe the government's role in our personal lives should be small and not intrusive, and that this not only is against the constitution, but would waste a lot of tax dollars attempting to enforce it. Thank you.

If you would rather not speak to a person, wait until later in the day and leave a voice mail. Make sure you leave name and address so they can tally it.

In addition to calling, you can also use ResistBot to send an email, fax, or mail (fax and mail cost a few dollars I believe)

So if you're in the UK you have probably heard about the proposed changes to disability benefits. If not, here is a BBC News article (link) about it, and the Big Issue (link) have been running basically non-stop articles about it since the announcement.

Crucially, the government is holding a consultation. Will as many of us as possible weighing in change the outcome? Possibly, though it's far from guaranteed. Will not filling it in help the situation in the slightest? No. So let's all have a go.

You can find the full Green Paper here: (link) and the options to respond are at the bottom of it, including the link to respond online, which is also here: (link)

It's also always worth contacting your MP to let them know what you think, if only to get a response on fancy Commons stationery. You can find your MP here: (link)

So, have at it, UK folks! (These proposals don't apply to Northern Ireland as benefits are transferred, but they are still taking NI comments and sharing them with the Department for Communities, so you may be able to influence whether this approach is taken up in NI in future, too)

And if nothing else, please reblog!

Jewish people who escaped the Nazis were breaking the law. Literally. Outright.

The law is a horrible judge of morality.
