I'm sorry, I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but... look, I already have to argue with my loved ones that hope for better days is a moral imperative in distressing times, I don't want to have to argue that with the comics I read, too.

I understand the appeal of trying to be extra cynical to guard against disappointment. But to paraphrase another friend of mine, that's a cop-out.

(Also a cop-out is this vague, hand-throwing "well, no one could have stopped it" attitude about an event that occurred because of less than 1,000 votes. I know Trump's election challenges a lot of cherished it-can't-happen-here assumptions we held, but surrendering those doesn't mean also giving up on the concept of causality. Things happen for reasons, not "because it was an unthinkably bad thing so of course it happened, Murphy's Law LOL, and the next decade will be unremitting hellfire but we're PREDICTING that, so we're the REAL winners here.")

(I know, I know, too much ink about a minor diversion. But I've seen this same basic attitude in all too much popular culture of late, and I just had to vent about it somewhere.)
