I'd say "Finally, a Trump who does something constructive," but did he really have to take the White House with him?

Eh, the British set it on fire in 1814 and we rebuilt it just fine. Twitler would probably get the explosives from some crony who cut corners anyway, so it would only blow the windows out and cause smoke damage.

Abolishing the police is not really helpful talking point.

The fuck they think gonna happen to minorities of all sorts with no police and a cultural aversion to exercising our 2nd Amendment rights?

Yeah, if you want to see what a world without cops is like, I suggest you read up on the Montreal "Night of Terror" in 69. Where the Montreal Police went on strike for 16 hours and all screeching Hell broke loose.

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2020/6/3/1947064/-Good-News-Roundup-for-June-3-2020-It-s-On-Us

Basically when the Police were gone, a bunch of taxi drivers got together to protest against one particular Taxi company that had a monopoly on the airport taxi routes in the city, which basically devolved into a shoot out.

I mean I don't want cops to go away, I just want Cops to stop being racist assholes and I want them to stop murdering people. I don't think that's asking for them to part the Red Sea here.

Alternatively, when the NYPD went on strike in 2014-2015, the overall crime statistics went down: https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/09/nyc-cops-did-a-work-stop-yet-crime-dropped/

So maybe there are a lot of factors that go into urban safety in addition to police presence and no one should assume that just because they have a role to serve does not mean they are all necessarily integral to the law & order of citizens.

This is the first line in the article.

In late 2014 and early 2015, escalating tensions in New York City led to the NYPD staging a slowdown in which the department performed only its most essential duties.

What it means, is that they stopped doing bullshit harassment like stop&frisk and entrapment, but they still answered calls and arrested people who were actually actively committing crimes unprovoked.

So they didn't go away. They just, for a change, did what the police is actually supposed to do.

Calls to abolish the police does not necessarily mean calls for abolishing law practice entirely. It means decentralizing their power. Instead of training candidates a huge number of things and then move them laterally between its internal departments, you get rid of the idea of a police force and create multiple departments of responders with very different equipments and very different trainings and very different power over the public.

This practice we have of having welfare checks, hostage situations, rape investigations, traffic violations, and school truancy all handled by people who applied to the same job and given the same budget, same union, same chain of command is what's asinine.

Well they burn it all down people need to be very specific then.

Because the sound bite version just sounds like a bunch of lazy fuckwits drowning out the voices of people actually fighting for the concrete changes (end qualified immunity, cripple police unions, civilian oversight boards, etc) from being heard.

Of course the sound bite version is not specific. It's a sound bite, a chant, a slogan. But it's not like I just came up with those specifics myself. That's been some of the simpler talking points of the abolition movement. Multiple papers and books have been written outlining these possibilities and legit non-profit organizations formed to advocate for this idea. For YEARS. But they can't avoid saying "abolish cops" because that's literally the premise of those ideas.

I dunno, to me, maybe the problem is that more people should learn to get past sound bites and listen to what the activists are actually saying.

Man, what do you think is happening to minorities right now, with the full support of the cops? Police are letting white vigilantes run wild, all buddy-buddy with them.

Police in Europe or East Asia doesn’t carry guns. Sure, there are a lot of problems and minority groups are likely to be harrassed by police - in fact, policemen and policewomen tend to be conservative authoritarians - but deaths or serious injuries by police are very rare. Take what you will from it.

I know the two party system has created a lot of false comparisons (like the center party being the opposite of the far right party) but do people really think the options are fascism and anarchy?

What if I want paved roads AND for law enforcement to be held accountable for their actions?
